Nesting Diaries
As of 4/4/2023, no osprey have been seen. It is noted that a huge new home is being built directly across from the nest....
Wow those two chicks have grown! I am glad they all made it past July 4th bc Bay Head had a ton of fireworks.
I spotted Clyde flying overhead with a huge fish, being hassled by a red-winged blackbird. He delivered it to Bonnie who promptly fed it to her two chicks.
The other day I took a ride to check on them and observed an interesting behavior. For a good five minutes, a male red-winged blackbird continually harassed Bonnie as she sat on the nest, even landing on her back at one point! I know the rw blackbirds are extremely protective of their territory but I thought it was unusual because the osprey nest has been there for a number of months. Do rw blackbirds eat baby birds? I ask this because it appeared after the blackbird left Bonnie fussed about the nest with greenery, as if she were covering up eggs or perhaps newly hatched chicks.
This nest is new to me. I was lucky enough to see "Bonnie and Clyde" mating so hopefully there'll be hatchlings in a month or so!
