Nesting Diaries

06/02/2019 by dabbler22
Two chicks observed again today during feeding time with their parents.

05/27/2019 by dabbler22
I'm happy to report that two small chicks were seen in this nest today. Their little heads popped up when we saw the male bring in a small piece of fish, which the female fed to them while the male stood guard on the platform with them.

05/04/2019 by dabbler22
Female osprey was sitting deep in nest. A neighbor says he's pretty sure he saw two chicks. This nest has always had chicks hatch earlier than others in Pretty Lake.

04/21/2019 by dabbler22
Female was sitting in nest incubating egg(s).

08/04/2018 by dabbler22
Adult was briefly at nest today. Two other ospreys flying high, directly overhead. Assuming this chick has successfully fledged.

07/15/2018 by dabbler22
Chick in this nest is growing large. Was alone in nest until mama spotted me kayaking near the platform and swooped in.

06/24/2018 by dabbler22
One osprey chick clearly observed in the nest today. Quite large--like last year, this nest seems to be ahead of others in terms of chick maturity.

06/02/2018 by dabbler22
We definitely continue to see one chick, perhaps two, in this nest. We never saw more than one head up at once, but the head(s) appeared in slightly different places in the nest, so it's hard to tell. Female was in the nest in her "mombrella" posture, and male was observed on a tree branch near the nest, then flying overhead, with female calling to him for food.

05/26/2018 by dabbler22
Looks like we have one, possibly two chicks in this nest. Saw both parents at the nest today.

05/13/2018 by dabbler22
Appear to still be incubating. Both adult ospreys were in the nest, one lying deep in it on the eggs. Quite a bit of nesting material in this nest this year.

05/05/2018 by dabbler22
This nest continues to be inhabited and one of the ospreys was sitting deep in the nest incubating the eggs. I'm a bit worried that the bottom of the nest appears to be falling through, but I'm hoping they have enough interconnected nesting material to hold things up.

04/15/2018 by dabbler22
I'm not sure exactly when this pair arrived and generally when their egg was laid, but one of the ospreys was definitely sitting deep in the nest today, while the other was flying overhead. This was the only nest in Pretty Lake that was successful last year.

I'm happy to report that this chick has indeed survived and this morning I witnessed him awkwardly flying around a bit with one of his parents and then sitting on a channel marker very close to the nest. It was still fairly small and I think very, very recently fledged, especially given he didn't seem confident enough to fly away when I paddled pretty closely to him when he was sitting on the channel marker and he was only making some quiet squawks.

06/26/2017 by dabbler22
It's hard to tell if the chick in this nest has survived. I kayaked past the nest on Monday morning, and the female adult was sitting on the ledge of the nest and loudly defending it. However, I didn't see any chick, and paddled past it twice within the course of about 40 minutes. The nest seems quite deep (it almost appears to be falling through at the middle), so it's possible there could be a nestling.

05/27/2017 by dabbler22
There is definitely at least one nestling in this nest. Probably no more than two weeks old. Its mother was in the nest with it.

06/19/2016 by dabbler22
There were no ospreys seen in or around this nest. Sadly, I think it has been abandoned. We'll check it again, just to be sure.

05/31/2016 by dabbler22
While I couldn't see any chicks yet, the behavior of the parents point to them having at least one chick in the nest. We'll continue to monitor, but we're optimistic that their clutch has hatched.

05/12/2016 by dabbler22
I paddled by this nest again today. One of the parents was sitting deep in the nest, incubating its eggs.

05/07/2016 by dabbler22
Male and female osprey were both on the nest when we kayaked close to the platform yesterday. They have definitely brought in much more nesting material than they had during previous visit.

04/19/2016 by dabbler22
This nest is occupied again this year! Today I observed the female eating a fish on a nearby channel marker, and presumably the male sitting deep in the nest.

08/09/2015 by dabbler22
Well, now it appears this nest has two chicks -- and they're both definitely flying! While they've both apparently been shy and hiding in the past, today there were definitively two chicks making quite a racket when I kayaked near their nest. Papa came by later to a nearby channel marker to stand guard. Great to see that this nest was more successful than originally thought.

07/05/2015 by dabbler22
I guess our little chick in this nest has been a bit shy, because today was the first time I actually saw it! Great to know that this pair has actually had a chick all along.

06/21/2015 by dabbler22
At dusk this evening I kayaked past this platform. Both male and female osprey were sitting on it, but still no sign of any chicks.

06/12/2015 by dabbler22
Still hard to say if this platform has chicks. When I paddled by on Friday morning, the female was sitting in the nest as if she perhaps had chicks, but I didn't see any or any feeding behavior. Will continue to monitor.

05/31/2015 by dabbler22
The female osprey was sitting on her nest late this evening. I kayaked past the platform two times and watched for a while. The male osprey was observed each visit sitting on a nearby channel marker, and then he flew each time to the platform alongside the female. No chicks or chick feeding behavior was observed, but that's not to say that chicks aren't there. I wasn't there long enough either time to be sure.

05/23/2015 by dabbler22
Both the male and female osprey were observed together on the nest platform at sunset. It's not clear if they have a chick yet.

05/03/2015 by dabbler22
Nest is clearly active with pair incubating egg(s). I watched the female hang out on a sandbar next to the platform for a bit.
