NOTE: Based on the observations of 5/7-13, we have indicated at least one nestling in the nest with a guess of hatching about 5/7. The hatching date is our best guess. We will alter the number of nestlings when we can see more than one.

Additional info: While observations led us to believe there was incubation and a nestling, We now believe we were either incorrect OR something happened to the nestling. This might be a young pair as evidenced by them rebuilding a second time this season. Very confusing!

NOTE: Based on the osprey rebuilding in another tree this late in the season, we are making this confusing nest as non-productive.

06/19/2021 by CarolC
Jin and Larry report some interesting info. Background: This was the nest that had to be moved, but the osprey rebuilt the nest instead elsewhere. New observations: 1) lots of ivy is growing around the nest and into the nest, 2) there is no activity in/on/around the nest nor the non-pine tree for months, 3) but there are a lot of activities on that same pine tree across the street, 4) the big surprise is a new nest is partially built on the lower level of the same pine tree across the street (located at 2 South Shore Drive). So that we think the old nest on non-pine tree is abandoned (no baby yet) and they started building a new one on this same pine tree. NOTE: It is far to late to rebuild and have a successful nest this season. Some random thoughts: Maybe this is a young pair the didn't quite get it right and don't know it is too late. Also, it doesn't appear that there is a nestling after all. Not sure what happened or if we mistakenly thought there was a nestling based on behavior. It is possible that there was an egg that didn't hatch and what was observed was Mom " fussing" with the egg. These are just guesses.

NOTE: Based on the behavioral descriptions provided, it seems likely that there is at least one nestling in the nest. We beliee that is the case based on the adult behavior of not staying in the nest, but looking in it, flying over, and both adults on branches near the nest, yet attentive to the nest. Our assumption is that there is at least one nestling but he is not yet visible in the nest. We are guessing hatching took place around May 27th since both adults were out of the nest, nearby, and attentive to the nest. We will adjust this as needed.

WONDERFUL RESULTS! Yesterday the nest was relocated from its original spot to the new location, high up in a nearby, mature pine. A huge thank you to the following, who played significant roles in the work: • Luxury Imaging professional photography - drone observation to confirm that the nest was empty (As expected, it was.) • Langan Contracting - project coordination • Hoft Environmental Service - physical relocation of the nest All of these groups responded quickly to do their do their part to show their commitment to the environment. The property owner paid for the nest move. We are delighted to have residents and local companies so in tune with the environment that they are willing to go the extra mile...and take on the expense...of helping these birds.

Jin and Larry report: 3/09 4:00 pm : the nest was relocated to another pine tree about 100 feet away, on a small 3 pronged branch, which we hope will be suitable and that the osprey accept the moved nest.

Jin and Larry report: 3/06 4:30 pm : an osprey standing about 20 feet from the nest (same position as 3/4)

An email was sent to the Leamington board explaining the situation with this nest. We were told the tree is scheduled to be removed for a "pool installation", they think. We were told there was no osprey nest site noted on the information they had. Our concern was then referred to the ARB board chair at Leamington. So far we have not had a response to our request to consider letting this pair nest and to wait and remove the tree in late July after fledging. We also suggested erecting a platform nearby, as other local gated communities have, to provide a safe place for the pair. As of 3/5, the tree and 2 balloons are still there. Also, an osprey was seen on 3/4 2:30 pm standing about 20 feet from the nest. The osprey were not seen 3/2, 3/3 nor 3/5.

Jin and Larry report: Unfortunately, we have sad news to report: yesterday, we noticed our nest tree has a red ribbon wrap around it which means it to be cut down, that's why two shiny aluminum balloons are placed very close to the nest, to prevent the osprey from nesting, it worked, we have not seen the osprey around the nest in 5 days. Today, we saw the osprey back and standing right next to the nest again, wow we're really surprised and feel sad at the same time. NOTE: We will follow up on this.

Jin and Larry report: 6:30pm - no bird, no activity. Note: we noticed an aluminum balloon stuck in the tree about 20 feet from the old nest. Hopefully, this does not scare the birds from nesting.

Debby B reports: . Yesterday late afternoon, Tues. 11th, stopped by nest for few minutes with both babies hunkered down. Luckily, dad few in with fish and proceeded to dissect it for kids and few away. Mom was like a stone statue on adjacent limb. This morn, stopped by and saw one baby in nest, so that other had flown yesterday pm after MA and I left scene. Then, LUCKILY saw this one baby fluttering wings and jumping up and down...with mom flying from adjacent tree to limb right above nest. Suddenly, baby took off mid air toward lake, flying low circling nest about 4X.Two birds flew overhead and I thought one was the other baby who may have fledged yesterday, but, no, the other baby appeared center of nest when courageous one returned. Then #1 "big sister" left little one in nest, sort of standing and looking around. So think perhaps this morn (12th) was first flight and the other will follow in day or so. So that's just additional observation to closing out our happiest avian family on Hilton Head!
