Nesting Diaries

Pat R reports: Not certain that I did not report previously that unoccupied nest 7842 on the 10th hole of Dolphin Head Golf Course has blown down and no activity has been seen this year. I keep hoping I'll see an osprey trying to build a new nest, but no luck. They have disappeared from there.

Pat R reports: I saw this nest,7842, this week and the nest is still there. Will keep an eye on it at least once a week in the coming weeks and report when I see activity.

07/29/2023 by HHI Osprey Watch
Pat R reports: My Osprey Nest at 7842 that I observed twice today, had a larger bird on a branch above the nest the first time and the bird sitting on the nest the second time. From talking to others who live close by and have observed that nest it appears that the bird might be one of the two nestlings who have grown and the other might have already flown the coop. It’s about time. NOTE: Based on this, the previous report, and the timing, it is likely that both of the nestlings have fledged and that they are just still checking out their nest at times. We will mark both as fledged sometime between July 16 and 29. We will record as our best guess, July 22 which is about the midpoint.

Pat R reports: Last report I saw two maybe young ones flapping their wings around the nest. Today I just saw what could be an adult sitting on a limb above the nest and just one head sticking out of the nest. Always hard to tell just what is going on up there.

07/05/2023 by HHI Osprey Watch
Pat R reports: The osprey nest #7842 observed from Dolphin Head Golf Course’s holes 10 and 18 looks like it has two live young ones. I saw two small ones move and spread their wings individually. Occasionally I have seen an adult fly in and out.

Pat R reports: Osprey Nest 7842 – 10th hole at DHGC has been active the last few weeks where I’ve seen adults fussing in the nest or sitting on branches above, but yesterday I saw one adult fly away, one adult fussing in nest and what looked like two little heads beside the adult in the nest. At last I think we have babies although I can’t tell how many. Can’t wait until the next viewing. NOTE: Based on this observation, we are indicating 2 nestlings but can change that if needed.

05/05/2023 by HHI Osprey Watch
Pat R reports: Earlier this week I saw one adult flying in with nesting material to Nest 7842, 10th hole DHGC although it had looked like the nest had been completed some time ago. Yesterday, May 4th, I saw one head that looked like an adult sticking up from the nest. NOTE: Based on this observation, we are more confident that incubation began late April/early May. May 1 is just a guess.

04/04/2023 by HHI Osprey Watch
Pat R reports: My nest 7842 at the 10th hole at Dolphin Head Golf Course had an osprey sitting on the nest and one flying away this week. So a pair is doing something.

03/19/2023 by HHI Osprey Watch
Pat R reports: At last on Thursday, March 16th I saw an adult osprey, first on two branches above the nest #7842 (10th hole Dolphin Head Golf Course) and later looked like it was standing on the nest. Today, March 19th, I didn’t see an osprey anywhere as I observed for only a few minutes from two points. Hope to see more action when I check next week.

Pat R observed no activity in February.

07/18/2022 by HHI Osprey Watch
Pat R reports: Although we closed out the nest for the season, I was surprised yesterday when I say an osprey sitting by the nest just like I’ve seen many times in the past. Only one again. I never could figure out if it was a parent guarding the nest or only one kid since I never saw more than one at a time. Maybe the kid is just hanging around the old household

07/02/2022 by HHI Osprey Watch
NOTE: This nest is high and it is difficult to get exact dates of incubation, hatching, and fledging. We are confident of one fledgling but cannot provide the date.

Pat R reports: Nest 7842 on the 10th hole at Dolphin Head Golf Course may be inactive at this time. In the past I’ve seen adults flying in an out and fussing in the nest but have never seen the babies even with binoculars since the nest is too high. For several weeks I did see one perched on a branch near the nest but could not tell if it was an adult or a bigger baby out of the nest. I never saw more than one either on the nest or on a branch. I always thought it was an adult guarding, but now I wonder if that was the only baby that was big enough to go out to a branch and wait for an adult. Very frustrating since other nests I’ve monitored I always have seen more than one baby and always very distinguishable. So since I’ve seen nothing in the last couple of weeks I have to assume that the one I saw hanging out was the only baby which had not fledged.

Pat R reports: Nest #7842 across from DHGC’s hole ten showed an adult rummaging around in the nest last week and today I saw an adult fly out. That nest is going to make it.

03/05/2022 by HHI Osprey Watch
Pat R reports: Nest 7842 (DHGC hole 10) which had shown a completed nest the last couple of weeks, now showed an osprey perched on a branch above the nest.

02/25/2022 by HHI Osprey Watch
Pat R reports: Nest 7842 across from our hole 10 on Dolphin Head Golf Course looks active. The nest looks complete and I saw an osprey standing on it. Not doing anything but looking off to the distance.

07/17/2021 by HHI Osprey Watch
Pat R reports: On Thursday I saw two adults on branches very close by and today, July 17th, I saw two crows stealing twigs from the sides of the nest and an adult osprey raising its wings from inside the nest to chase them away. Can’t see babies from the point of view I have through my binoculars. We have heard lots of noise from the nest sounding like little ones begging.

07/01/2021 by HHI Osprey Watch
Pat R reports: Going past nest 7842 on DHCG today we did see an osprey again sitting on a limb beside the nest. Didn’t have binoculars with me so we couldn’t tell if it was an adult or juvenile.

06/24/2021 by HHI Osprey Watch
Pat R reports: Thursday, June 24th. As I passed the nest on the golf course, I saw an adult sitting on a limb beside the nest and nothing else. When I passed it again a few hours later from hole 18 I saw nothing (used binoculars both times) but heard lots of osprey cries coming from that area. We all tried to see something but nothing! Nest still looks good but can see nothing in it.

06/19/2021 by HHI Osprey Watch
Pat R Reports: I checked Nest #7842 on the 10th hole of Dolphin Head Golf Course. Saw two adults sitting on the branches in the tree near the nest but no activity in the nest. Later I saw one flying around the tree, but couldn’t see where it landed and had to get on with my game such as it is.

05/16/2021 by HHI Osprey Watch
Pat R observed: showed nothing when I first went by, but later from one spot on hole 18 I could see with binoculars something which looked like an adult sitting on the nest.

05/01/2021 by HHI Osprey Watch
Pat R reports: An adult sitting there deep in the nest with only the top of its white head showing. We will simply estimate that incubation is underway and that it began about mid-April.

03/19/2021 by HHI Osprey Watch
Pat R reports: Still no activity.

03/11/2021 by HHI Osprey Watch
Pat reports: No activity.

03/08/2021 by HHI Osprey Watch
Pat R reports: Nest 7842 seen from DHCG holes 10 and 18 hasn’t had any life,

07/24/2020 by HHI Osprey Watch
Pat R reports: The juveniles have fledged and the nest is now empty when I have checked it recently.

06/20/2020 by HHI Osprey Watch
Pat R reports: Saw two good sized ospreys squawking in nest #7842 NOTE: We assume these are two youngsters that may have hatched about a month ago.

06/06/2020 by HHI Osprey Watch
Pat R reports: I saw no activity at 7842 Hole 10 at DHGC

05/23/2020 by HHI Osprey Watch
Pat R. Reports: saw an adult sitting on a branch outside the nest

05/16/2020 by HHI Osprey Watch
Pat R reports: DHGC hole 10 may have had a head sticking up from the nest on Sat. May 16 NOTE: We guessed this might have been a hatchling. Probably correct since on 6/20 two "good sized" osprey were seen.

05/04/2020 by HHI Osprey Watch
Pat R. found this nest on May 3. Because it was just located, we have limited information on the nest prior to the start of monitoring.

05/03/2020 by HHI Osprey Watch
Pat R reports: I checked it out today and saw an osprey sitting on a branch, but couldn’t see anything in the nest from my point of view
