Nesting Diaries
Pat R reports:
At last on Thursday, March 16th I saw an adult osprey, first on two branches above the nest #7842 (10th hole Dolphin Head Golf Course) and later looked like it was standing on the nest. Today, March 19th, I didn’t see an osprey anywhere as I observed for only a few minutes from two points. Hope to see more action when I check next week.
Pat R observed no activity in February.
Pat R reports: Although we closed out the nest for the season, I was surprised yesterday when I say an osprey sitting by the nest just like I’ve seen many times in the past. Only one again. I never could figure out if it was a parent guarding the nest or only one kid since I never saw more than one at a time. Maybe the kid is just hanging around the old household
NOTE: This nest is high and it is difficult to get exact dates of incubation, hatching, and fledging.
We are confident of one fledgling but cannot provide the date.
Pat R reports: Nest 7842 on the 10th hole at Dolphin Head Golf Course may be inactive at this time. In the past I’ve seen adults flying in an out and fussing in the nest but have never seen the babies even with binoculars since the nest is too high. For several weeks I did see one perched on a branch near the nest but could not tell if it was an adult or a bigger baby out of the nest. I never saw more than one either on the nest or on a branch. I always thought it was an adult guarding, but now I wonder if that was the only baby that was big enough to go out to a branch and wait for an adult. Very frustrating since other nests I’ve monitored I always have seen more than one baby and always very distinguishable. So since I’ve seen nothing in the last couple of weeks I have to assume that the one I saw hanging out was the only baby which had not fledged.
Pat R reports: Nest #7842 across from DHGC’s hole ten showed an adult rummaging around in the nest last week and today I saw an adult fly out. That nest is going to make it.
Pat R reports: Nest 7842 (DHGC hole 10) which had shown a completed nest the last couple of weeks, now showed an osprey perched on a branch above the nest.
Pat R reports: Nest 7842 across from our hole 10 on Dolphin Head Golf Course looks active. The nest looks complete and I saw an osprey standing on it. Not doing anything but looking off to the distance.
Pat R reports: On Thursday I saw two adults on branches very close by and today, July 17th, I saw two crows stealing twigs from the sides of the nest and an adult osprey raising its wings from inside the nest to chase them away. Can’t see babies from the point of view I have through my binoculars. We have heard lots of noise from the nest sounding like little ones begging.
Pat R reports: Going past nest 7842 on DHCG today we did see an osprey again sitting on a limb beside the nest. Didn’t have binoculars with me so we couldn’t tell if it was an adult or juvenile.
Pat R reports: Thursday, June 24th. As I passed the nest on the golf course, I saw an adult sitting on a limb beside the nest and nothing else. When I passed it again a few hours later from hole 18 I saw nothing (used binoculars both times) but heard lots of osprey cries coming from that area. We all tried to see something but nothing! Nest still looks good but can see nothing in it.
Pat R Reports: I checked Nest #7842 on the 10th hole of Dolphin Head Golf Course. Saw two adults sitting on the branches in the tree near the nest but no activity in the nest. Later I saw one flying around the tree, but couldn’t see where it landed and had to get on with my game such as it is.
Pat R observed: showed nothing when I first went by, but later from one spot on hole 18
I could see with binoculars something which looked like an adult sitting on the nest.
Pat R reports: An adult sitting there deep in the nest with only the top of its white head showing.
We will simply estimate that incubation is underway and that it began about mid-April.
Pat R reports: Still no activity.
Pat reports: No activity.
Pat R reports: Nest 7842 seen from DHCG holes 10 and 18 hasn’t had any life,
Pat R reports: The juveniles have fledged and the nest is now empty when I have checked it recently.
Pat R reports: Saw two good sized ospreys squawking in nest #7842 NOTE: We assume these are two youngsters that may have hatched about a month ago.
Pat R reports: I saw no activity at 7842 Hole 10 at DHGC
Pat R. Reports: saw an adult sitting on a branch outside the nest
Pat R reports: DHGC hole 10 may have had a head sticking up from the nest on Sat. May 16
NOTE: We guessed this might have been a hatchling. Probably correct since on 6/20 two "good sized" osprey were seen.
Pat R. found this nest on May 3. Because it was just located, we have limited information on the nest prior to the start of monitoring.
Pat R reports: I checked it out today and saw an osprey sitting on a branch, but couldn’t see anything in the nest from my point of view
