Nesting Diaries
Mom is laying very low in the nest, hard to see her, and since flag was added male no longer sits in the tree next to the nest.
We were gone a few days and came back to a flagpole right near the nest, and no ospreys! I reached out to the Parkwood Beach Assoc, we'll see what they say.
Sure hope the ospreys are not disturbed by a big new flag that was recently put nearby :-( [see photo]
Saw what looks like new work on the nest over the last week. Today saw one in the nest, then flew off to circle around. Lady nearby said she'd been seeing activity for about a week.
There are photos posted in the neighborhood Facebook page of an osprey on the nest.
They are doing great, both babies are almost the size of the parents and practicing flying
Definitely at least two there, the nest is angled so hard to get a clear view but a couple of good sized heads were poking out. Parents are always nearby and vocal when people walk by.
One or two nestlings, will keep an eye out to get a more accurate count. Saw little head/s poking up.
Seems to be at least one nestling, parent was feeding it, but may be more. Will keep an eye out.
Both parents are in the nest today, spending lots of time looking inside it. Curious to know if some hatching is going on!
Got another shot of the one with one leg, seems to be the female as the one usually in that tree next to the nest definitely has two legs. He also has a bent feather on his left wing, uploaded a couple to show that. No signs of eggs/babies yet.
Both have been around regularly, female has been staying in next last couple of weeks. Male is usually right above her in tree or flying around.
Continue to see both parents but neither staying on nest yet
Do they tuck one leg under?? It really looks like he's missing his right leg.
Consistently see two in the nest, not a great nest but slowly being filled in.
Slowly but surely building up the nest!
Not making much progress on the nest but they look nice and healthy!
Saw them flying around on Saturday and tonight they were both in the remains of last year's nest making plans for a renovation.
The pair is away from the nest for long periods so looks like no chicks hatched. :-(
The pair has been off the nest quite a bit. Starting to think that the eggs may not have hatched. The nest damage back in late April could have exposed them too much. Stay tuned.
The parents were off the nest this a.m. when the male had a fish (see photo) but then the female went back to it.
The female is off the nest a lot more, but haven't been able to spot any chicks yet. Hope there are some!
Saw the female off the nest for a bit on 6/5 so keeping watch but still hard to say whether there has been any hatching yet.
The female still appears to be incubating on the remaining nest (see photo). Saw the male bringing in nest material.
The female started incubating a few days ago. It still looks like she may be sitting on eggs in what little is left of the nest. Will keep watching to see how it goes.
80% of the next blew down into the road about 40 minutes ago in these high winds. We moved the debris off the road to where they can more safely retrieve it. No sign of eggs.
The nest weathered the weekend storm. Saw the male bringing back a fish. Doesn't look like incubation yet but maybe soon.
Saw two hanging out today and a start to the nest
Watched the resident male drive away an interloper.
Definite stick-gathering and nest-building activity today.
Two birds were seen on the nest early yesterday but were not there later in the day. Will keep watch.
An osprey has been seen on the nest several times but may just be visiting since no building activity has happened yet. Saw a dramatic encounter with a crow today who was trying to steal the osprey's fish.
Parents left earlier in August. 2 of the 3 chicks were around for several weeks, now appears to be one left.
Last check fledged probably on Aug. 9. Have not seen much of the parents lately.
2 chicks have now fledged, the first several days before the 2nd. Still waiting for #3.
Chicks are not quite fledging yet but should be soon.
Several confirmed sightings of three chicks! Starting to stretch their wings.
Definitely 2 chicks, possibly 3? The oldest is much bigger than the other(s) (see pic).
Likely there are 2 chicks but hard to get a photo with both of them yet.
No chick sightings yet but dad is watching over the nest from a nearby tree (see photo).
The female was out of incubation position and appeared to be tending to something in the nest, likely the first hatchling.
Thought I had updated this status. Real progress was made over the weekend and there is now an actual nest (at least until the next round of high winds expected this afternoon).
No sign of a nest, any material brought by the birds gets blown away in these crazy winds.
The nesting pair is settling in. But there were 3 other ospreys harassing them this morning!
Saw 2 ospreys on the pole together and just a few wisps of nest material. They have a long way to go!
Several ospreys seen in the area but no sign of nest building yet.
Male has arrived as of 3/22. Still waiting for the female.
