Nesting Diaries
Nest site is occupied, with one adult on the nest, presumably on eggs, and the other feeding on the northeast stadium light. Tremendous noise below from kids and athletes on the field.
Nest is occupied as of March 18, 2023.
3:45 PM: One adult and two fledged young present at nest. Each of the young took flight and circled back to land at the nest. Their landings were pretty awkward.
0715 hrs: nest is active, observed an adult in the nest but could not determine if there any chicks in the nest bowl.
1820 hrs: observed three ospreys in the nest and conclude there is at least one chick or nestling present.
Osprey pair is back tending to this nest that first appeared in 2019.
After the heavy winds on 4/30 they must've needed to do some repairs around the nest. They were gathering more sticks for the nest.
Was going for a walk on the trail here and noticed the nest. I happened to have my camera in the car and snapped a few shots. I didn't notice at the time that this fella had lunch in his hand :) I plan to revisit soon with a better lens.
1635 hrs: a pair of adults observed circling around the nest (one with a fish) and landing on the nest briefly; also evidence of new materials (branches) being added to the nest.
1430-1445 hrs: stopped by to observe nest, no bird activity detected.
1640 hrs: new nest materials added since last visit; no adults observed but photos taken of the nest from the ground.
Osprey adults were observed over Akridge Scout Reservation in the previous week. Upon closer inspection, evidence of new nest construction was confirmed today on top of southeast stadium light at Kent County's Kesselring County Park on New Burton Road.
7/15/22: 7 PM, One adult and two young present at the nest. Below the nest, on the athletic field, are several groups of young adults playing soccer. Ospreys not disturbed. Some wing flapping observed, but no flights by the young observed. ("Date observed" field is not working properly)
8/15/22: 9:50 AM, Lone osprey is perched on SW stadium light. I’m guessing it is a juvenile. Smaller kids are practicing soccer underneath. The osprey takes flight, and wanders off to the west, eventually landing for several minutes on a farm irrigation mechanism.
