Description
Right before you enter Palmetto Bay Marina, there is an apartment complex on the left called Palmetto Bay Marina Village. It is before you get to Sunrise Cafe. Enter the property and you will pass two lagoons; one on the left and one on the right. After you pass the two lagoons, take a left and you will come to a dead-end, where there is a tennis court. I have never seen anyone use this court. Also, no apartments around to bother people. It is on the other side of the tennis court but you can best see from the parking area.

What to look for

Adult Arrival
Look for 2 adults on the nest. The adult pair will show pair bonding behaviors such as vocalizations, aerial sky dances, and the male feeding the female fish. You may see the pair copulating, which typically begins 14 days before laying eggs.b
Incubation Initiation
Females will lay 1 - 4 eggs at a rate of one egg every 1 - 2 days. After laying, incubation starts. Look for adults taking turns sitting low in the nest incubating eggs. The incubation period can last 35 - 43 days.c
Clutch Hatching
Chicks hatch ~39 days after incubation begins. Look for adults bringing food to the nest and making "head bows" into the center. Chicks typically can't be seen until they are 2 - 3 weeks old, so feeding behavior is the only way to know chicks are there.d
Nestling Count
Around 4 weeks after hatching, look for the heads of chicks to show over the rim of the nest, particularly when adults bring food to the nest. Other times they lie flat and are harder to see. Count the number of chicks in the nest before they learn to flye
Fledgling Count
Chicks begin flying around 7 - 8 weeks old, and are still fed by the adults. Count the number of chicks who have successfully fledged the nest and are observed flying.f
Chick Last Observed
4 - 10 weeks after fledging, chicks begin leaving the nest area to migrate south, once they have learned to fly and feed themselves. Record the date that the last chick left the nest.x

Look for signs of nest failure like adult abandonment, adults no longer incubating eggs or feeding young.Review All Observations

NOTE: Based on reports of no activity since late May, we are assuming that this nest failed for an unknown reason. By mid-July, there should have been evidence of nestlings/fledglings.

Marge I reports: Barely saw top of Osprey’s head. Hunkered down in nest . Did not see or hear second bird. Assuming she is incubating her eggs

Good Activity at 7481. At first one Osprey in the edge. A second one flew in and momentarily landed on the back of the first one. Both flew off and a couple minutes later returned with sticks

Marge I reports: Exciting day for me. I FINALLY saw junior! When I got there I saw a bird perched on top of the nest preening. It appeared smaller with mottled feathers. I waited and in a little while one of the parents flew in with a fish. It jumped down and started eating. I am assuming there is one juvenile

Mary Alice T and Marge I. report: Male flying had just dropped off a fish. You can barely see female, but she's there!
NOTE: Since we just found this nest, but Mom appears to be in the nest with eggs, we have recorded incubation on the 11th although we really do not know when it started.

observer Mary Alice T: found this osprey nest and we determined it was not being monitored. Because of this, we have missed some of the dates activity occurred, but now are able to monitor the nest beginning in early April
