Nesting Diaries
moving out of area next month, will be unable to complete my osprey nest monitoring :-(
one adult standing on side of nest
nest is empty today, no osprey in sight. probably the hailstorm in late may took out the eggs at this nest, too.
mom incubating. i'm beginning to think this is another failed nest, that the egg is nonviable. will wait until next round to officially give up
mom incubating, dad in adjacent tree, both alarm calling, i could never locate intruder
mom incubating, watched dad fly into nearby tree
finally, we have incubation!
one in nest but not incubating that i could tell. big hailstorm last night, worried that it might have destroyed eggs in some of my nests.
one standing in nest, one on tree, guess incubation will probably start while i'm on vacation the next 8 days
one bird perched in tree overlooking nest, no bird in nest bowl
mom standing in nest, dad on nearby tree
one in nest, one in nearby tree
one standing in nest, one perched in tree
well i missed some real drama here today. when i first arrived, it was deja vu - mama goose standing in the nest. there was one osprey flying around her, but not attacking. i went for my hour walk; when i returned, mama goose was gone, one osprey was in the nest, and the other osprey was eating a fish in the adjacent tree! boy, i would have loved to see the baton exchange at this nest (or maybe not)
goose still in nest yesterday. i think this male might be the one harassing the sowerwine pair yesterday *the nests are right down the slough from each other, and possibly also the male putting sticks on sowerwine's middle nest in frustration.
goslings hatched in this nest, one osprey has returned to its home, per joanie. update 4/18 evening: goose mama still in nest, but she's standing, so she looks like an osprey from afar, but not. from her posture, i'm guessing she and her goslings will be gone tomorrow.
nest was empty when i drove by the first time; an hour later, chick was in nest eating a fish.
One healthy female chick with full crop wingercizing in nest
chick standing in nest, no parents around
only one chick left in this nest, adult standing guard in nearby tree
hayfield cut so i could get nearer the nest today. watched for about 10 minutes, one chick moving around nest and wingercizing, no sign of any sibling, both parents gone. cold and rainy this morning. this looks to be a nice healthy female nestling (distinct necklace)
mom standing in nest, one chick moving around before laying down, did not see 2nd chick
mom standing in nest, calling for dad. chick/s laying down, saw one head pop up for an instant
one chick standing up in nest, didn't see the other one, both parents gone
mom feeding one chick, other chick did not make an appearance
mom standing in nest, one chick visible this morning
mom feeding at least two chicks, i keep thinking i see a 3rd head, but can't confirm.
after july, the nearby hayfield will be cut, and i will be able to get much closer to this nest than i can right now. observed mom laying in nest, no sign of dad or chicks this morning, but i am watching from quite a distance...
mom laying in nest, no other activity observed today
mom laying in nest, snoozing.
mom and dad both in nest, one parent is definitely feeding a tiny one deep in the nest bowl
got back from 2-week vacation to find mom blissfully incubating today.
female standing in nest, male perched in nearby tree. this is in the area with lots of intruders harassing at least 5 established nests right now, although didn't see this pair getting bothered today
both in nest area today. one standing in nest, one in nearby tree.
