Nesting Diaries

Finally, they started to build a nest. They have been here since late January, mated, but hadn't started building a nest until now.

This is really strange. The Ospreys returned to the tree on Jan 28th. I have observed them breading 3 times now but, they aren't building a nest. What's up with that, anyone?

07/14/2016 by Haole
Finally, the 3rd chick fledged. Yesterday (7/13/2016) it appeared as if one of the other chicks pushed it off the nest but, it flew. Today all 3 chicks are flying around. The nest is deteriorating.

A bit worried about the 3rd nestling. The 2nd nestling fledged 2 days after the first but, the 3rd one is still in the nest. It appears as if it halfheartedly exercises it's wings, not getting them fully extended. We are thinking that there might be something wrong with it. Haven't a clue it there is something that can be done and, if so by whom. The other thing that seems strange is that the adults seem to have abandoned them after the 2nd nestling fledged. I did however see an adult there one time since. I haven't seen either of the 2 fledglings with fish yet.

Chicks are growing fast. Last 2 pics are 12 days apart.

There are chicks up there. I can hear them but, can't see them yet so I don't know how many there are.

The chicks have been fishing in the lake behind our house but, I haven't seen them catch a fish yet. They keep trying though.

Approx 0800 hrs this morning 6/27/15 the first chick took flight. Grabbed my camera and as I was going out to get closer to the nest it flew directly over me. Then when it tried to land back in the tree, it miscalculated and had to try again. Made it the second time. Rested a bit then took off again. It hasn't returned as of 1700 hrs. Hope it's ok. Waited all day with the camera for the second one to fly but, it's still a bit timid. Maybe tomorrow, I hope.

Today around noon, one of the chicks was helicoptering pretty high. I caught it on video but the site won't let me upload it. I thought it was going to fly. Won't be long now, hope I can catch it with the camera.

Finally....I thought I saw a head sticking up this morning, so I grabbed the camera. The pic confirmed that there are at least 2 chicks.

It appears as if the adults are feeding young so although I can't see into the nest, I believe there are chicks. If this is so, then I assume that the date I entered for incubating is probably wrong.

Reconstruction of this nest was started in late January. Mating was observed on March 13th. On Feb 27th the nest was attacked by another Osprey. The homeowner prevailed, however. See the pictures posted on 3/27.

No young were observed in this nest and the nest has been destroyed by a storm

Although I have no way of seeing into the nest, approx on 4/13/14 I observed only one Osprey perched outside the nest. This has continued for about 3 weeks. So, I assume that eggs have been laid and incubation has begun. Occasionally, one Osprey will perch at the side of the nest. Bringing food to the one in the nest?

On 4/2/14 and again on 4/3/14 I observed what appeared to be the Ospreys mating. On 4/2, the male was doing some aerial acrobatics, then flew to the nest where he appeared to couple with the female. On 4/3, I observed the male fly to the female, who was sitting in the tree outside of the nest and again it appeared that they mated. The male keeps bringing sticks to the nest.
