Nesting Diaries
The nest was clearly damaged following Hurricane Isaias and partially abandoned. For the week following, the nest was occupied by a single adult sized Osprey. The nest has been unoccupied for at least 7 days now.
Again, this nest is located on a steel platform on top of stadium lights. Number of eggs, incubation or hatching could not be determined. It is the noise coming from the nest that alerted me to the existence of the fledglings.
I noted an adult-sized bird at the nest site yesterday afternoon. The actual nest material is not visible. This morning I noticed a second adult-sized bird at the nest site.
I noticed the same nest located on top of the light pole adjacent the Bayside High School football field survived the winter. Approximately 3 weeks ago, a number of Osprey would visit the nest, however no obvious efforts to rebuild, enhance the nest structure. Recent, there appears to be a more substantive presence of birds at the nest. Encouraged to see the nest maybe active, as in past years.
For the better part of 3 weeks the nest has been empty, with no activity of signs of the pair. I do not believe the nest produced any chicks. I have seen Osprey in the area, possibly associated with another nest in the area.
Since the weekend of 05/18/2013, I have noticed a pair of Osprey at the nest, which was vacant for a period of time. Not sure for the reason why the nest was vacant. This past week I noticed the birds bringing extra nest material to the site. Hopefully this is a good sign as it relates to the viability of the nest. Also noted the birds are carrying food to the nest.
Since my last posting, there has been no activity in the nest, although there has been a noted presence of Osprey in the area. Unclear if these Osprey are related to the original nest.
Activity was considered normal during the month of April, with both birds present at the nest. I have noticed no activity at the nest for the past week, 10 days, nor the obvious presence of any Ospreys in the area. My view of the nest is somewhat blocked now that the trees have leaves, however it appears the nest is still intact, given nesting material still present. This morning I saw an Osprey perched on a nearby light tower at the same playing field. I can not tell if it is one of the original adult birds.
The nest is still active with a pair maintaining a full time presence. There have been occasions when a third Osprey has attempted to visit the nest, resulting in a confrontation.
