Again, drive by today confirmed two nestlings still on the nest.

07/10/2023 by Jerry
After a long absence, I finally observed the nest and saw two, I believe, nestlings and an adult, at 5:00 PM. Wish I had been able to make more observations this season but, nest difficult to observe while driving on a two lane bridge.

04/07/2022 by Jerry
Both adults observed on nest @ 3:39pm

04/02/2022 by JustDucky
At about 08:45, I observed the female setting on the nest. She was watching my every move as I photographed her. I looked down for a moment to change some camera settings; when I resumed photographing I noticed the male had arrived and was sitting on the edge of the nest. In practically every photo after that, the female had her eyes closed, presumably because she knew her mate was there to keep an eye on things. ;-)

First actual view of nest since March due to covid-19 today. No activity but nest appears to have been active this year. There was nesting material that I did not observe in March.

07/07/2020 by Jerry
Unable to observed the nest this season due to restrictions on Langley

07/27/2019 by Jerry
Both osplets viewed on pilings on 7/26 @ 2:23 pm with an adult with them and other adult flying in the area. Both juveniles appeared quite healthy.

07/13/2019 by JustDucky
Saw all four birds at the nest today. The chicks have really grown! The two adults were perched on the edge/rim of the nest; one chick was in the nest, the other was in front of the nest eating a fish. The adult male flew over me several times coming within 20 -30 feet or so each time. Apparently satisfied that I was no danger to them, he flew off retuning minutes later with a fish that the adult female took and began eating. After a few more minutes the male flew off again, presumably to catch another fish.

06/15/2019 by JustDucky
Confirmed today there are two chicks in the nest. Observed the female and both chicks for 45 minutes this morning. Photo posted.

06/09/2019 by JustDucky
Observed the female yesterday at 0930 perched on the top edge of the nest. Couldn’t see any chick(s) in the nest. Today I stopped by the nest around 1245 and saw the female perched at the edge of the nest, but also detected movement in the nest. A chick made its way to the top of the nest to poop over the edge and look around for a moment. So there is at least one chick in the nest. ;-)

06/03/2019 by Jerry
Pretty sure I save a hatchling today while crossing bridge at about 3:30 pm, will view again!

05/26/2019 by JustDucky
Saw both adults at the nest today from 10:30 to 11:00. The female (presumably) was in the nest on one side; not deep in the center of the nest as when she was sitting on the eggs. She was quite vocal all the time that I was there. I could hear her as I was getting out of the car, even before I walked on the bridge. She was eating while the male (presumably) perched on the edge of the nest. She was also bending down into the nest but I couldn’t tell if she was feeding a chick or not. After eating, the female eventually moved so that her back was to the sun and she kept her right wing spread as if providing shade for the nest. The male flew away retuning a few minutes later with a stick which he placed on the nest. After another minute or two he flew off the nest perching 10-15 feet away.

05/18/2019 by JustDucky
Observed an adult on the nest. Did not see the other adult. In 20-30 minutes of watching, the adult on the nest rose up at least 3 times, appeared to gently move a little bit and settle back down. Perhaps the chicks have hatched and are moving a bit causing the adult sitting on the nest to move, too.

05/08/2019 by Jerry
Adult, viewed, on nest, presumably the female probablely incubating at 2:45 pm

05/04/2019 by
While watching one osprey sitting on the nest, another, presumably the male, flew up with a fish.

05/04/2019 by
Saw both adults today. One was sitting on the nest. After 10 minutes or so another flew up with a rather small fish.

05/04/2019 by
I saw one adult sitting on the nest. After about 10 minutes the other adult arrived with a small fish. A minute or two later, it flew off with the fish but after circling the area a time or two, it returned to the nest.

04/27/2019 by JustDucky
Observed one adult sitting on the nest this morning. Did not see the other adult.

04/20/2019 by JustDucky
Observed both ospreys at the nest this morning. It appeared that they and the nest weathered the storm last night with no damage. Although, the bird not sitting on the nest was busily flying off and retuning with small twigs.

04/14/2019 by JustDucky
In the two weeks since I last observed the ospreys, they have finished building the nest and apparently laid eggs. Saw one adult sitting atop the nest. Did not see the other adult in the area while I but I stayed for only a few minutes.

04/05/2019 by Jerry
Observed an adult @ 307 on 3/31 before they closed the bridge for repair

03/30/2019 by JustDucky
I saw two ospreys at the nest site on Saturday. The previous nest did not survive the winter so one of the ospreys was bringing small limbs/twigs to the site obviously starting to rebuild. I noticed that neither of the birds had bands on their legs. That indicates to me that neither is the female that has been nesting there since at least 2014 when I began photographing the ospreys. That female had a band on each leg.

09/05/2018 by JustDucky
I saw one of the ospreys at 6:15 this evening. It flew to the water tower on Langley AFB being very vocal as it approached. It continued vocalizing for quite a few minutes. I wonder if it hurt itself. Its cries have ceased now but it's still perched on the water tower some 40 minutes later.

09/03/2018 by JustDucky
I observed the nest site on Saturday, 1 Sep, around 12:30 and on Monday, 3 Sep, around 10:15. I did not see any ospreys.

08/26/2018 by JustDucky
I observed the nest area for a few minutes between 10:30 and 11:00 both yesterday and today. I did not see any ospreys in the area.

08/19/2018 by JustDucky
Yesterday I saw two ospreys on the pier structure in the early afternoon. One was there when I arrived; the other landed after a few minutes. Today there were no ospreys around the nest or the pier structure but I saw one flying around nearby.

08/12/2018 by JustDucky
I observed the nest yesterday morning but didn’t see any ospreys at the nest. Looking down the pier structure I saw an osprey perched on a post. I was able to get a few pictures before it flew away and I could see that it was one of the juveniles be the color of the eyes. Today when I visited the nest there were no ospreys on the nest or pier structure. After a while I spotted one flying overhead. It was joined by another a few minutes later, and yet another a minute or two after that. After circling overhead a few times, all three flew off together toward open water. Perhaps it was an adult and the two juveniles headed out to get their next meal.

08/05/2018 by JustDucky
Yesterday, 4 Aug 18, both chicks were at the nest site along with the male adult (the female has bands on both legs/feet). The male was eating but soon flew away landing further down the pier. One chick was on the nest and the other was outside the nest on the pier structure. Both had a whole fish which they picked at in-between looking around. They were certainly taking their time eating. Today I saw only the two chicks; no adults in sight. One chick was just outside the nest, presumably the same one that has been outside the nest the last few times I have observed the nest. The other chick was not at the next but rather further down the pier structure.

07/29/2018 by JustDucky
I saw both chicks at the nest yesterday and today but did not see the adults. Yesterday one chick flew away when two fishermen brought their boat nearby. The juvenile flew over the old pier structure several times before choosing a spot to land. When I arrived today both chicks were back on the nest but one was eating what appeared to be the tail portion of a fish. I assume the one eating was the same one that flew away from the nest yesterday—more active than the one that remained at the nest. Today, when a water ski came close by, the chick with the fish part stopped eating to keep an eye on the water ski. The other chick tried to seize the opportunity and get a bite of the fish. However, the chick with the fish immediately defended its claim to the food and the other chick moved off to edge of the nest. Don’t know how the chick got the fish; presumably brought by one of the adults.

07/22/2018 by JustDucky
The chicks were in the nest today but were so low they were hard to see. It appeared as if the nest was empty. The adults were not around at first but the female soon arrived landing on the far side of the nest. Didn’t see her anymore but heard her a few times. Several people driving across the King St bridge stopped to ask me if the chicks were still in the nest. They blended in so well with the nest they were very difficult to see. Occasionally they would raise up and spread their wings. They are getting pretty big.

07/18/2018 by Jerry
Both chicks and an adult on the nest at 3:30 PM. Chicks appear to be growing nicely.

07/15/2018 by Jerry
Both chicks observerd today perched on edge of nest @ 3:15 PM

06/24/2018 by JustDucky
Observed the female and two chicks today around 11:15. She was on the edge of the nest with her wings spread a bit. She eventually moved enough to reveal that she was providing shade for the chicks. Picture posted.

06/17/2018 by JustDucky
Both adults were at the nest both yesterday and today. The female was on the edge of the nest; the male was nearby. The female occasionally would bend down into the nest. Maybe some chicks in the nest?

06/10/2018 by JustDucky
Observed both adults at the nest site today from approx. 10:40 to 11:20 am. The female was on the edge of the nest eating. The male was about 50-60 ft away facing the nest. After finishing eating, the female became very vocal. It wasn’t the normal sounds she makes when I approach on the bridge parallel to the nest that I assume she’s letting me know she does not want me there. Instead she was much, much louder and continued for several minutes until eventually the male flew away. After he left, she was quite for a few minutes, then began making her normal sounds when I’m photographing her. When I began walking away she quieted down. No signs of any chicks yet that I could see.

05/12/2018 by JustDucky
Observed both adults at the nest. The female was sitting in the nest. The male arrived with a half-eaten fish, sat on the edge of the nest for a moment, then flew to the side of the pier, presumably to consume the remainder of the fish. The female left the nest twice as a small boat motored near by but each time she quickly returned and resumed sitting in the nest.

05/06/2018 by
I observed one adult sitting on the nest.

05/06/2018 by
I observed one adult sitting on the nest.

04/29/2018 by JustDucky
I saw both adults at the nest site around 11:30 today—one near the nest and one sitting inside the nest, presumably atop eggs. Neither of them paid any attention to me as I walked across the bridge to observe them.

04/23/2018 by Jerry
Both adults on nest @ 5:15 PM with minor improvements to nest

04/22/2018 by JustDucky
Saw both adults at the nest site today. It appears that they are starting to construct a nest.

04/20/2018 by Jerry
Both adults observed on nest 1:45 with the first semblance of starting a nest.

04/14/2018 by JustDucky
Today around 12:30 both adults were at the site where the old nest had been. The female was eating while the male waited a few feet away. No sign that I could see of any efforts to start rebuilding the nest.

03/31/2018 by JustDucky
I saw an osprey setting on the old nest site. No apparent evidence of rebuilding the nest.

03/30/2018 by Jerry
Observed one adult on the "nest" @ 3:30 PM today. Observed an adult flying over pond on the west side of Langley @ 1:45,

03/25/2018 by JustDucky
I visited the nest site yesterday and today but did not see any ospreys either day. There was no sign that the ospreys were rebuilding the nest.

03/17/2018 by JustDucky
I observed the nest on 17 February 18 and saw that it had not survived the winter very well. The sides/walls of the nest were almost flat as if the weight of the heavy snowfall in early January pressed them down. On 17 March 18 I visited the nest again and found it was basically gone. However, the ospreys were there. One flew away as I came into view; the other stayed at the nest site. I will continue to watch to see if they will rebuild the nest.

07/30/2017 by
I observed the nest for about 20 minutes on Saturday and Sunday (29-30 Jul). Did not see any ospreys at the nest, perched on the pilings, or flying about.

07/23/2017 by JustDucky
I saw an adult on the pilings today but it flew away before I got across from it on the bridge. After maybe 15 minutes an adult appeared circling overhead with a fish in its talon. Enlarging one of the photos I took revealed bands on its talons which makes me think it was the female because she has bands but the male does not.

07/22/2017 by Jerry
Observed both adults on pilings @ 2:15pm. Small birds flying into nest. Then observed, what I believe was the fledgling flying over the Back River.

07/20/2017 by
I observed the nest for about 20 minutes on Saturday and Sunday (29-30 Jul). Did not see any ospreys at the nest, perched on the pilings, or flying about.

07/16/2017 by JustDucky
I drove by the nest on Friday, 14 July 17, but did not see either adult or the chick. Today I looked at the nest from afar with a spotting scope and saw the female perched on a wood piling a short distance from the nest. Could see no birds on the nest.

07/08/2017 by Jerry
Hatchling on rim of nest again today @ 4:00 being fed. Observed a total of 3 adults in the area, presumably 307's adults and one other.

07/02/2017 by JustDucky
I saw the female fly up to the nest as I just started crossing the bridge to reach the usual place from which I photograph the nest. When I was close enough to begin taking pictures I saw that she was eating and feeding the chick. I have not seeen the male since the end of May so I don't know if the male brought the fish she was eating and left before I arrived or if the female caught the fish herself.

06/17/2017 by JustDucky
Saw a single chick in the nest today. It was big enough to climb to the top of the nest and set near the female.

06/10/2017 by JustDucky
The female was sitting on the edge of the nest this morning. She voiced her concern as usual as I approached my normal position for viewing/photographing the nest, but soon quieted. She never moved from where she was perched but kept an eye on me only occasionally glancing into the nest. If there are chicks, they're not big enough to be seen above the edge of the nest.

05/29/2017 by
Observed the female at the nest this morning. The male flew away as I approached. The female was sitting off to one side of the nest frequently looking into the nest and lower her head into the nest. I suspect the chicks have hatched. Won't be able to see them until they are big enough for their heads to rise above the edge of the nest.

05/29/2017 by JustDucky
Observed the female sitting to one side of the nest. The male flew away when I approached. The female frequently looked down in the nest and lowered he head into the nest. Surely the chicks have hatched and she is tending to them. Cannot see into the nest, so will have to wait until they are big enough to raise above the edge of the nest.

05/21/2017 by JustDucky
Last week I observed the male sitting on the nest and witnessed the "changing of the guard" when he left the nest and the female returned. This week the female was on the nest when I arrived. However, she was near the top edge of the nest, not sitting deep in the center as if she was sitting on eggs. Several times she looked down in the nest. It made me wonder if perhaps the chicks had hatched and she was watching them. After I returned to my car I looked at the nest through my spotting scope and saw that the female appeared to be sitting in the nest again rather than up near the top.

05/06/2017 by JustDucky
I have been viewing the nest each weekend. The female has been sitting on the nest each time I have stopped by. She voiced her concern as I got near on the King Street bridge but did not fly away, rather she remained atop tbe nest. Though I cannot see into the nest I assume there are eggs in the nest judging from the behavior of the adults.

04/15/2017 by JustDucky
Both adults were at the nest at noon today. Both flew off as a speedboat passed near the nest but they quickly returned. One sat on the nest with its head barely visible while the other flew away.

04/09/2017 by JustDucky
Last weekend, 1 Apr 17, both adults were at the nest. The female was perched on the edge of the nest and the male was perched a few feet away. Today, only the female was at the nest and she was sitting in the nest as if she has already laid eggs.

03/18/2017 by JustDucky
Observed an adult on the nest, fixing it up. Flew off and brought back a stick to add to the nest.

03/05/2017 by Jerry
Adult seen on nest, 2:15 pm

03/05/2017 by Jerry
Adult observed on nest 2:15 pm.

09/12/2016 by JustDucky
I saw neither the female nor the male osprey on Saturday and Sunday. Perhaps they have already departed the area.

08/28/2016 by JustDucky
Yesterday I did not see either the male or female at the nest area. Today, however, both were in the area about 25 feet from each other. One was eating a fish, the other perched on a piling.

08/20/2016 by JustDucky
I observed the female today still in the area. Last weekI saw both the male and female.

07/30/2016 by JustDucky
Today I observed both the male and the female osprey still in the area near the nest.

06/25/2016 by JustDucky
For the last several weekends I have observed the nest. The female has always been in the area; sometimes the male nearby, too. Neither have been at or on the nest while I was watching.

06/04/2016 by JustDucky
Using a spotting scope I observed the nest without disturbing the ospreys. The female was perched on the edge of the nest constantly vocalizing. The male was about 30 ft away. After 5-10 minutes, the male flew away but the female remained perched on the nest continuing to call out. She sometimes would turn around and face the other direction. I decided to walk across the bridge to the point of being abreast of the nest so I could get a closer look at the nest. The female flew away well before I was even halfway to being across from the nest. Othe birds perched on the nest before I reached the viewing point. Using the spotting scope, I examined the sides of the nest but saw no evidence of baby chicks. I could not see into the nest but just see the sides.

05/28/2016 by JustDucky
Using a spotting scope I observed the nest yesterday morning from a distance from the nest. Neither the female nor the male were sitting on the nest. I saw neither bird around the nest. I walked across the bridge to get a better look at the nest and as I got closer to the nest I could hear the female begin to call out. She was nearby; maybe a 100 feet away from the nest but showed no interest in the nest. Later in the morning, the male arrived in the area, too, but did not go near the nest. In fact, he did not stay long but flew away after just a few minutes. The female did not leave where she was sitting all morning long. Other birds were around the nest and some sitting atop it. So, it appears to me that the nest has failed.

05/22/2016 by JustDucky
Observed the nest yesterday morning and this morning. Neither time was the female on the nest. Yesterday she was behind the nest, on the platform on which the nest is built. Today she flew up and landed on the edge of the nest. Both days as I walked across the bridge and drew near parallel with the nest, she flew away . . . far enough away that I could no longer see her. After several minutes she returned but landed some distance away, not on the nest. Today, after I left and walked back across the bridge to my car, I used a spotting scope to look back at the nest. I saw other birds frequently perching on the nest. The female osprey was still perched further down away from the nest. I also saw the male land some distance further down from the female. Both ospreys preened for a while but neither returned to the nest as long as I was watching.

05/14/2016 by JustDucky
Saw the female on the nest--same one as in 2014? She has a band on each leg the same as the female ther in 2014. Observed while she sat on the nest, the male brought her a meal, she flew a distance away to eat, and the male took his turn sitting on the nest. Couldn't tell if the chicks have hatched yet but both the female and the male looked down into the nest several times before sitting on the nest and then did so slowly and carefully. Posting a few pictures.

Adults, seen on the nest for about a week. Multiple sightings

I believe this nest only had 1 chick. I believe it was removed from the nest like last year.

This nest is a "survivor" well based and growing.

Nest is active with at least one chick. Observation is difficult while traversing the bridge but, definate sighting of one.

I just created nest #5728, which is within sight of this nest. A second nest has been built and is in use on the same pier pilings as this nest. The nest marker for this nest (#307) should be on the northern-most end of the derelict pier. Incubation continues today.

There was an Osprey on the nest 4/14/2015. Picture posted.

Two Osprey were at the nest this afternoon.

Reports are that two fledged from this nest this year.

I believe the chicks were removed from the next by personnel from the military base.

I asked Reese Lukei, Research Associate with the Center for Conservation Biology, about this nest. This was his reply, "Not sure but think the chicks were removed from the nest and flown to midwest as part of reintroduction program. I'll see if there are more details. CCB has done this in the past. I removed chicks from North Landing River years ago and sent to Indiana." I haven't heard anything further. I will make another entry if I get any more details. I did some searching and found this article about a translocation program for the safety of the Osprey and the planes that fly out of Langley Air Force Base. I think this nest has been successful almost every year that I have been watching it, beginning in 2004. I believe the chicks were still there at 12:45 pm on Jul 6; the mother was on the nest holding out her wings to shield them from a gentle rain. The nest appeared empty on Jul 8, but there were 4 Ospreys on the trestle pilings in different locations. Today, the nest was again empty, with 3 Ospreys visible on the trestles at 1:00 pm and 4 Ospreys were visible at 3:45 pm. Perhaps the young ones are "branching" on the trestle pilings. However, the presence of 3 or 4 Ospreys is not unusual at this sight, even as the nest is being prepared at the beginning of the season in March. I would like to think that LAFB personnel did not tamper with the young ones. I've reached out to LAFB birders for info. I will post their response.

The baby osprey chicks are gone. A lady from a local photography club told me she read in the paper that Langley will remove the fledglings and introduce them to another area in Virginia. Perhaps that is what happened to the chicks. The parents were still around but keeping a distance from the nest. It appears pigeons have taken over the nest for now.

Just a few pics this week. Didn't crop so the nest could be used as a frame of reference to judge the size of the babies. They seem to have grown a lot in the last week--feathers beginning to fill out. Momma osprey left the nest when I approached and stayed about 30 ft away. The chicks now looks bigger than the pigeon.

Uploaded a few pics from observing the nest this week. Got to see the male bring another fish as well as watch the female feed the chicks. Starting to see feathers on the chicks now.

I uploaded some pics of this nest. This site appears to not put the pictures in the order uploaded so it may be a little difficult to tell if a pic belongs to the 1st week, 2nd week, or 3rd week. I added the date taken to the lower right of each pic but it is a bit small. Yesterday the male brought a fish to the nest which the female fed to her young. Full-size pics and video can be seen at www.dondavidsonphoto.com/nature/osprey/.

I saw a man camped out taking pictures of the nest. I told him about this site and encouraged him to post pictures! He said he's been watching the nest for two weeks and that there are two babies. The hatch window from the first date I observed incubation is 5/16-5/22, and that fits his observations of babies in the nest two weeks ago. I updated the activity report to match.

Mom was in the incubation posture and Dad was on a nearby piling. They were still there a half hour later when I drove by again.

Both parents were at the nest. One was perched just outside the nest while the other was moving sticks inside the nest.

This nest fledged 2 chicks. I don't know the fledge date.

06/16/2013 by chris7
I was able to see one baby today. Its head and neck was visible as it sat up in the nest bowl. It looked like a small/young chick. The parent was standing on the rim of the nest.

I went onboard Langley yesterday evening. I saw an egg roll on my way in and incubation about a half hour later as I left.

04/06/2013 by chris7
When I went onboard Langely today, there was an Osprey standing in the nest. When I left an hour later, there was an Osprey next to the nest and another a little farther down standing on a piling.

Shortly before 6:00PM this evening, I went onboard Langley and was able to see a large bird standing on this nest. There were no cars behind me, so I was able to come to a stop. It was an adult Bald Eagle standing on the nest. When I left at 6:45PM, it was gone.

Youngsters grew quite large. Sat on top of nest, spreading wings as if for flight. Eventually they fledged, however, they remained in the area, near trestle nest and adults. By mid September one young and both adults had left. One young remained in area for about two weeks, usually sitting on trestle near nest.

Nest is once again abandoned...seems to be a source of curiosity for local gulls and other birds. Most significant observation for me was how the mother sat for hours throughout the hot summer days with wings spread to provide shade for her young. This must have been a grueling process for her, with no relief from heat.

Looks like 2 babies at this nest. Looks like they are big enough now to come out of the nest bowl.

Female sitting on nest, remained vigilant. Male in near vicinity; moved to different spots, but stayed on trestle and pilings. He was preening, occasionally looking downward into water under the trestle where he was sitting--probably looking for fish.

I was gone for 5 weeks, have seen one Osprey on the nest each visit since my return on 26 Apr 12. Have seen second Osprey near nest twice. Thanks to whoever took the photos!

03/22/2012 by GolfTango
Three Osprey in the area when I arrived there today. One at the nest, one on a pier piling eating a fish and one farther down on another piling.

Two adults on nest 3/20/12 6:45PM

I have seen Ospreys nesting here in two previous years. Nest is still there. no Ospreys seen yet this year.
