Nesting Diaries
Robin S reports: I haven’t seen any activity at mine nest yet. It doesn’t appear that it was used last year. Hopeful!
Robin S reports: No activity.
Jack C reports: No activity at the nest. We are calling it INACTIVE for the season.
Jack C reports: saw NO activity in the nest yet. However, I have sighted a few Ospreys fly by my nearby home recently. My birds have been known to be late nesters.
Jack C reports: I think my Osprey chick has fledged since I saw no birds in the Branford platform nest recently ... and I saw three Ospreys flying together and one looked like a young bird.
Jack C reports: A lone Osprey chick has hatched and was observed for the first time in the platform nest # 2512 on Branford Lane in Indigo Run. No other chick could seen ... but hoping for more.
Jack C reports: Both Ospreys were in the nest last week. Mom stayed and is apparently incubating her eggs ... and Dad is nearby and sounding off! They are late nesting this season. This makes about 18 years of Osprey nest occupancy in #2512 off of Branford Lane.
NOTE: We entered incubation starting about April 25th based on this report.
jack C reports: Today was the first time I have seen Ospreys in Platform Nest #2512 on Branford Lane in Indigo Run. Two adults were in the nest at the same time ... and then one flew away (probably, the male). It's a great sign that breeding has started there for 18 straight years!
Jack C reports: No activity on this nest as yet this season. They are usually a late nesting pair at this nest. However, I did see two Osprey 'fly-bys" recently ... and that is encouraging!
UPDATE: While the chick appeared to have fledged, he didn't make it. Sometime after he was reported to have fledged, a call was made to the Bird of Prey Center about an Osprey on the ground. Those looking for it did not find it and had hoped he flew off. The next day, another call was placed. This time, the bird was found. The plan was for him to stay with a trained rescuer for the center and then be transported the next day. On 7/22 I spoke with the Bird of Prey Center and was told that the osprey died prior to arriving at the Bird of Prey Center. Since he never reached them, they can not confirm what caused him to die. The lady I spoke with speculated that he may not have mastered flying and fell/injured himself. A sad ending to the nest this year. We indicated in the nest data 1 fledgling, because we do believe he fledged but then may have fallen/gotten injured.
jack C reports: The nestling fledged within the past week. Note: We are posting the date as July 8 as our best estimate.
Jack C reports: This morning I found 1 chick and Mom in the nest. I assume the juvenile has not yet fledged ... but will update you when it does and the nest is empty.
NOTE: based on the May 8th observation, we are listing 1 chick in the nest and will update it when we can confirm the number. We do not know the date of hatching, but estimate it may have been the week of April 13th.
Jack C. reports: Mom Osprey is in her nest and continuously looking down into her nest as if to be attending to her chick (s). I did not see the head of a chick … but strongly feel there is at least one chick in the her nest. (Due to the virus etc. no reports were possible since early March)
Jack C reports: For the first time this season I saw momma Osprey sitting on her nest, apparently incubating her eggs!
Jack C reports: Saw an osprey in the area. The appearance of the Osprey is a good sign that nesting may begin soon in its nearby nest in Indigo Run
Jack C reports: No activity at all. This nest tends to have late arriving osprey.
Jack C reports: My wife and I were playing a quiet game of Scrabble while overlooking our backyard creek (lagoon) and saw a juvenile Osprey from the platform nest at the end of our block fly by. It landed in some shrubs outside of our picture window and next to our home. It fell down into the shrubs and could not get out. I hurried outside to see what I could do to free it. I took a lawn rake. I was beginning to think the worse: This young bird has broken its wing or damaged something else ... and cannot fly! After about 15 minutes of prodding with the rake to try to make a clear path out and get it to move out of the shrub, it finally came to the front of the shrub and plopped out onto the ground. Then, it looked at me intensely for a few seconds as if to say: "Thank you" ... and then took off flying! What a great ending!!
Jack C reports: Adult Osprey seen feeding large juvenile in platform nest.
Jack C reports: I still have a lone large chick in my Branford Lane platform nest. However, I have not seen it fly as yet
Jack C reports: Found an Osprey chick in the nearby platform nest with an adult for the first time this season!
Jack C reports: Mom is still on one nest apparently incubating eggs. No sign or movement of a chick as yet!
Jack C reports: Mom and Dad Ospreys are at and on their nest ... but I have not yet seen the movement of a chIck! I'll keep you posted if that changes!
observer Jack C reports:Mom Osprey is in the nest and I assume she is incubating eggs. Poppa Osprey was on a telephone pole nearby.
observer Jack C reports:Osprey was at the the platform nest but not in the nest as yet.
Jack C. reports: I have seen two Osprey chicks in the Branford Lane platform nest and saw one there today. They have both fledged and my best estimate is about a week ago.
2018 observations by Jack C.
Note that the hatching date of 5/15/18 is a pure guess based on incubation and appearance of at least one chick.
observer Jack C. reports: I saw an Osprey chick in the platform nest with Momma for the 'first' time this nesting season!
observer reports: Osprey was still in high platform nest at the end of my block on Branford Lane and looking down frequently ... 'apparently' paying much attention to chick (s) ... but I could not see a chick in the nest.
observer reports: Momma Osprey still in nest but cannot see any evidence of a chick as yet ... only Momma's head can be seen from my ground view. Will continue to monitor and let you know if/when a chick can be seen in the nest.
Observer reports:
Momma Osprey is still on the nest with either egg (s) or Chick (s) ... I cannot tell at this time. I can only see the head of an adult Osprey pop up periodically. I assume all is going well since she is still on the nest. I think this one will be a late fledging based on others I've heard of this Spring!
