Nesting Diaries

Nest is very active. Both male and female present and currently building the nest up.

These two continue to add small stuff to nest but have been very quiet the last few days. They do get excited when another Ospray invades their space.Love to watch them defend the nest.

Still adding to the nest, looks like mostly soft material to line it with. They are still exhibiting the mating dance.

03/19/2013 by bird
The nest is coming along nicely, amazing how fast they can build one.The birds look healthy and I assume are going through the mating ritual. I may have another new nest to report. This one is on top of a floodlight pole at a ball park down the street from where I live. Not on the water, but not far from it either. Will keep an eye on it and see if they are going to stay.Exciting!

I did not see my pair of Ospray, for three or four days, they just weren't near the nest when I was there.Have better luck the last couple days. The nest is really coming along. In fact I have seen as many as six cruising the sky from other nest sites.Things are looking good so far.

This latest photo shows a nesting platform further out in the Pagan River,a little out of my camera's veiw, but the good news is that that pair also came back this year.

Yeah! The other Ospray is also back! They are very busy rebuilding there old nest sight. They look beautiful, very healthy.I am so excited to be part of this rebuilding of the nest.Love these birds!

Happiest of days! The Osprays are back!!!!! So exciting.Saw only one so far. They have a lot of work to do to rebilld that nest.I intend to capture as much of that as I can.

I have started watching what is left of the Osprays nest two weeks ago.Am excited for the season to begin. So far no birds, much to early, but within four of five weeks, hopefully they will be back!

This is the last photo I got of her(him). As you can see she doesn't look very good.I had seen her eating a fish several times,so I know she could at leat feed herself.

This nest produced three young, all seemed to thrive and become independent.By the end of August 2012,I was seeing only one in the area of the nest.I am assuming this is the little one.She remained in the area for some weeks. At times I was very concerned for her welfare because she seemed thin and looked unkempt, feathers were missing from her wings. She would sit and call for the longest time, probably looking for the other two or possibly a parent. My last sighting of her was about the third week of Sept.2012.My hope is she successfully migrated. Not a day goes by when I drive down where the nest was, that I don't think of her and pray she is alright. Can't wait for early March 2013 to see who returns. Will be a long winter.

Sadly and happily at the same time,it would appear that I have probably taken my last photos of the three young. The smallest of the young will sit on what is left of the nest, but doesn't stay long anymore.I have also seen one other of the young in the area, but looks like they have become quite independent.I will still go to the nest sight in the morning for a few more days in hopes of one more good shot of them.I will miss them very much, they have been a big part of my daily routine for several months.

Exciting day.The smallest of the three young, actually took a dive in the water three times. It \ also flew the furthest and stayed gone for about fifteen min.I hope it is on it's way to independence. The adults still bring it fish, but there is hope.I believe the other two are fishing on their own. They still come back to the nest area to roost.

This year these two adults had 3 young.I have taken pictures of them since March 7,2012. At this time,7/21,the three young are doing great. The two bigger ones are off flying, some days I don't even see them. The smaller on does take off flying, but still sticks pretty close to the nest. The adults are still bringing fish for this one.I am really praying for a success story.

The first shot of the young is on the left, the other picture was taken today,it is one of the young on a telephone pole near the nest.
