Skye's nests

This nest was originally on a power pole but we were able to get the utility company to erect a platform. The year this nest was moved, the ospreys abandoned it. The next year they started adding to the nest but no other activity was noted. This year there is activity and an adult is sitting on the nest. 5-5-14: One osprey sitting in nest and the mate bringing it food. Can't see any nestlings but I don't think it will be long now. 5-12-14: Observed parent still sitting on nest. Was getting concerned until I saw the mate bringing food. Still no nestlings that I can see. 6-1-14: Observed parent sitting on nest but did not notice any nestlings. It was raining at the time so I was not able to get a clear view. Am starting to get concerned about this nest. 6-21-14: I observed an empty nest. I am not sure if either of these adults were the ones that were electrocuted. I will continue to observe in case they were on the hunt at the time I was checking on them. I thought there would be nestlings by now. 7-26-14: No activity at the nest since the middle of June. I am certain the parents were the two that were electrocuted. We'll have to wait and see if another pair uses the nest next year. 11-04-14: This nest did not produce any babies and the two adults were electrocuted by flying into nearby power lines. 2 -2-2015: Today I noticed a pair of osprey sitting in this nest and flying around the area 3-1-2015: The ospreys are still there and I think they are getting ready to nest. . . 4-13-15: In the past two weeks, I have noticed the ospreys bringing in more nesting material, sitting in the nest, and then disappearing for a couple of days. Today, I noticed that one is sitting in the nest like she is incubating eggs. 5-31-15: This nest looks to be abandoned. For a week or so, one osprey was at nest and then it left. Have not seen it at the nest at all in the past week so I am assuming that for whatever reason, they have abandoned it. No hatchlings were ever observed. 2-14-16: In the past week, a pair of ospreys have been observed at this nest. They have been sharing food but I have not seen them adding twigs or anything to the nest yet. 5-15-16: For the past few months, there has been a pair of ospreys at this nest and one was even exhibiting nesting behavior. But last week I noticed that the ospreys were no longer in the nest or hanging around the area. Will continue to observe to see if they return. 2-27-2017: For the past two weeks I have been observing activity at this nest. Sometimes a pair of ospreys would be there, and then for a couple of days they would be gone. This week, though, I have noticed a pair there and one sitting in the nest. Will keep close watch on this nest as it has not been successful in the past. May 2017: We have 2 nestlings! This is the first time this nest has had a successful breeding season!

This nest is located at 6055 Lake Washington Rd, Melbourne, FL. It was originally located on a power pole but we obtained permission to move the nest to a platform. It has been active for quite a few years and has been very successful. We did lose an adult a few years back due to injuries we believe she sustained in a rainstorm that had very high winds. By the next nesting season the male had another mate and we again had babies. Presently, I have observed an adult sitting in the nest but have not been able to determine if there are nestlings yet. 5-5-14: Observed two nestlings in the nest. How exciting! I believe they might have been there the first time I reported but I wasn't 100% sure. No doubt about it now! 5-12-14: Both parents were in the nest today with the nestlings. I don't think it will be long before the nestlings are having flying lessons! 6-1-14: Both juveniles were in nest but I didn't see the parents around. Was able to observe one of the juveniles fly from the nest and return in a few minutes. Both look healthy. 6-21-14: Bad news. Around June 16 we found two of our ospreys electrocuted. They had gotten into the power lines. I was not available to get a look at them but it was reported to me that it was the adults. I observed two birds in the nest yesterday but I could not tell if it was the juveniles or not. If they are juveniles, I hope they are old enough now to take care of themselves. They would probably be around 7 to 8 weeks old. 7-26-14: It seems that the two osprey which were electrocuted belonged to nest #4925. The juveniles that belonged to this nest have learned to fly and are off hunting for themselves. The ospreys that belong to this nest have been seen in the area but the nest is not active at this time. 11-04-14: This nest produced two ospreys this season. We have observed a couple of ospreys flying around the area in the past two weeks. 24 Jan 2015: Since the beginning of the year we have spotted a pair of ospreys around this nest. About two weeks ago, one of them began sitting in the nest while the other flies around the area. 2 Feb 2015: We have an osprey sitting in the nest here. Not sure if she is already nesting because I haven't noticed the pair preparing the nest. 3-1-15: It looks like the osprey here is nesting. Saw only one today but will be watching the nest more closely now. 4-13-15: Good news! Today, I observed two nestlings. At first, I thought there was only one as one of the parents was feeding it but by going to the other side of the nest, I saw the other one. Will be keeping a close eye on this nest! 5-31-15: The fledglings are having their flying lessons! Have noticed them away from the nest with the parents keeping close watch over them. 12-30-15: Have noticed two ospreys hanging around nest. 12-31-15: Observed one of the ospreys in the nest. 1-1-16: Both ospreys were sitting in the nest today. 2-14-16: The osprey pair have been sitting on the next continually for the past four weeks. They have also been adding twigs and such. We should have nestlings soon! 5-8-16: Both adults have been observed at nest. They were sharing food and both were observed standing in the nest together. 5-13-16: No ospreys have been observed near this nest at all this week. Do not know what is going on 5-15-16: One osprey sitting in the nest. I'm beginning to think that we will have no chicks. Will continue to observe. 12-31-2016: Noticed a lone osprey sitting in nest. 1-2-2017: There is a pair of osprey at the nest. 1-9-2017: Noticed the ospreys bringing twigs to the nest. 2-27-2017: A pair of ospreys have been occupying the nest. Haven't noticed any unusual nest activity although one of the pair is always sitting in the nest. April 2017: Around the first week of this month a nestling was observed in this nest. May 2017: The adult ospreys and the fledgling have left the nest. There has been no activity for at least a week.

This is a nest presently under construction on a utility pole. It is located outside of the property at 6055 Lake Washington Road, Melbourne, FL. We have put in a call to the local power company to have them erect another platform like they did at 5980 Lake Washington Road. 5-5-14: This nest is still on the power pole and I have not observed any osprey there. 5-12-14: No activity observed here and no help from the utility company to get nest off power pole. 6-1-14: Have obtained the phone number of a contact at the power company and will call them tomorrow to see about having the nest placed on a platform. Have not observed any activity there. 6-21-14: I had reported this nest to the utility company around the first of the month. They went to site and removed nest. It wasn't active. 11-04-14: No signs of a new nest being built in this area. Will keep a watch to see if the ospreys try to rebuild there.
