Nesting Diaries

Neighbors reported seeing all four ospreys sitting in a tree down the river, east of the nest last evening.

This morning the youngest nestling practices flying while the older sibling stares at the river from a lower branch waiting for the parents to return with food. The nestling is able to lift a few inches above the nest but doesn't leave its perimeter and reacts to a blue heron who dodges the nest in its flightpath. Maybe after breakfast, with parental encouragement...and less traffic.. .

Early this morning three ospreys flew to the nest together, two carrying small fish. One left almost immediately. The other two stayed and had breakfast with the nestling.

One of the nestlings appears to have fledged. Seen on the lower branch and returning to the nest when an adult approaches. The other nestling remains in the nest.

Bright, blue, quiet morning; the mother left the nest, flew a few yards over a glass-like river and caught a good sized fish in full view of the nestlings. She didn't return directly to the nest but landed on a lower branch about 25' below and began eating. After a few minutes, she took the fish to the nest and fed the remainder to the two.

Nestlings are almost adult-sized. One seen flapping wings and rising a few inches over nest. Mother still divvys food between the two.

06/12/2020 by MCE
The two nestlings have grown quit a bit. They are flapping their wings and are feeding themselves when the adults bring food.

Saw female suspended in a branch fork below the nest, wings draped over the branches and feet/body hanging below. When she saw me noticing, she grabbed the branch with her feet and pulled up to a normal position. When I left, she dropped back into suspension as if sunning in the cool morning air.

Male returns after noticeable absence yesterday. Brings fish and looks on from nearby tree. After young are fed he returns to nest, female takes an entire fish from the nest and flies off. Male takes a piece of fish to eat at the tree. Female returns a few minutes later with fish and continues feeding.

Female continues to bring food for two nestlings today. Did not see male.

05/26/2020 by MCE
Female observed feeding nestlings at 4pm. Male brings fish at 4:30 and again at 4:53. Two nestlings visible.

Female feeding at least two nestling at 0845. Male brought stick earlier and placed on east side of nest. TS warning as Arthur moves up the coast.

Today there are clearly two nestlings, in fact we'll be watching to see if there's possibly a third. Male brought a fish at 4:45pm and the female is feeding them.

4:23 pm male brought fish to the nest. Appears to be at least one nestling.
