Nesting Diaries

A single osprey arrived on 3/7/15, a week later than usual, but the weather this spring has been brutal. We speculate that it is the female because of her behavior. Finally a second bird appeared on the nest on 3/18/15, we are thinking that the original male didn't make it and she has found a new mate.

An osprey showed up on March 7th. As of March 14th, still waiting for its mate. This could be the female, since the date of arrival was late, and the female usually arrives later than the male. Maybe the male didn't make it.

All three chicks are flying from and coming back to the nest.

06/06/2014 by coast2coast
Nestlings are beginning to climb up to the edge of the nest, chirp at intruders, and flap their wings. All three chicks still seem strong and healthy.

Finally was able to see there was a third chick in the nest, smaller than the others.

First saw the two chicks raise their heads, even though the parents have clearly been showing feeding behavior forseveral weeks.

The female was also on the nest on 03/01/14. Copulation observed on the morning of 03/03/14.

An osprey was on the nest on our platform this morning (resting, after a long flight).

The storm Derecho blew through on 6/13/13, and unfortunately, we left for 6 days that afternoon. The two fledglings had been exercising their wings, getting ready to fly. When we returned, one of the 2 fledglings was missing (6/19/13). Today (6/21/13) the 2nd fledgling was back on the nest with the two parents and the other fledgling!
