No birds have been seen at nest for about a week. I never saw any juveniles at this nest. Not sure what happened. Possible that something happened to the male.
This is a very large nest in the fork of a live pine tree. It's impossible to see into the nest. Every time I approach the nest, which is close to the side of a busy road, the female leaves the tree and starts flying around above my head in a circle and chirps. I have never seen this kind of response from the other nests I've observed. Seems odd since I'm on the other side of a busy road from the tree with cars passing all the time.
This position of this nest makes it very difficult to make observations but it appears that the female is incubating. She has been observed in the nest on most visits.
For the second year in a row, a pair of Great Horned Owls is using this nest. The owlets are branching now, so they should be gone before the Ospreys return. The Osprey pair that use this nest is usually the latest to return of the three monitored here.
The owls left the tree somewhere around the first of April. The last know sighting of the owl chick was March 29th at which time it was reported out of the nest and sitting in the tree with adult. The Ospreys returned to the nest shortly after this. First reported sighting of both parents on nest was April 7th.
I have gone by the nest severa time in the last few days and could not see any activity on or around the nest. It is a very large nest and it could be the female is down in the nest.
This nest was first observed last year. It was an active nest late in the season but was partially destroyed by hurricane Irma. The female was seen in the tree by the old nest for about a week before the male was seen for the first time 03/23/18. They have been seen together in the tree but not on the nest itself.
