Nesting Diaries
The pair has settled in and are doing nest maintenance. This nest held up well over the winter.
This week a pair has been seen at this nest most mornings. I first saw both on 3/17.
Welcome back!
I see this nest on my drive in and away each work day. I never saw a nestling or fledgling. I haven't seen any adults around for several weeks either. My judgement is this was a failed nest this year.
No activity at this nest today.
This pair remains active together and the nest is fairly large and strong. I have not seen any nestling heads popping into view yet.
Behavior of the pair at this nest indicates the eggs have hatched.
This nest is occupied by a pair and you can see the head of the one on the eggs pop up now and then.
A pair seen in or around the nest each morning the past few days. One likes to perch on a nearby power pole top to eat a fresh caught breakfast.
Pair seen at nest this morning. Solo Osprey in the afternoon. First morning that all UD nests were occupied.
I still see one perched at the top often. I haven't seen anything to confirm if the nest produced a fledgling.
It is hard to see in this nest. An adult is always perched or nearby, so I presume one nestling is still in there. I need to keep an eye out for flight or all 3 perched in view.
Some parenting behavior continues, though it is not robust. I'm guessing one nestling survived. The nest walls are high so I can't see it. I will log it when I see one.
There are still two adults tending to the nest so I'm guessing at least some of the nestlings are doing ok. Weather remains a challenge between heat and long periods of rain.
both adults observed, one appeared to be feeding today, entering all active (occupied) Pilottown Rd nest sites for the possible inclusion in the 2021 CIB State of the Bays 5 yr report
Two in the nest today, possibly tending to hatchlings. Nest is in great condition.
this nest is a duplicate of #6118 "Dutch Settlement" that is not in correct location on map. will try to get FW to delete #6118
I suspect egg laying to happen soon. The female is hunched over a lot in the center of the nest, often walking to the edge of the nest and back looking uncomfortable.
The nest has been built up further and is a beautiful round, solid walled, deep nest like it was last year (the best in the UD campus area).
Activity has been less than I remember last year. The nest held up well over the winter, it was the best one around. They don't seem to have rebuilt it much at all yet this year.
Nesting pair seen settled in this morning.
This nest appears vacated. No activity the last several times I've been by.
This well built nest made it through the tropical storm yesterday (53 kt gust max). I've only seen two of the fledglings since the storm though.
3 fledglings full grown and in and out of the nest.
3 healthy fledlings. One or two are flying at this point. The male may have left a week or more ago. I've only seen one adult lately.
3 nestlings seen today stepping over each other. One larger than the other 2.
One large hatchling spreading it's wings today. Haven't seen the head of the other one this week. Hopefully still 2 in this nest. Mother is well attending every time I go by.
Two hatchling heads popping into view this morning. Mother feeding hatchling behavior observed over the last week. Male is around often as well. Great built nest as usual for this pair.
Pair perched in nest this morning.
One perched in nest when I drove by this morning.
Vacant each time I've driven by the last few days.
Two seen in the nest this morning! Nest has been vacant every time I've driven by over the past few weeks. They must have been out training up for hunting and heading south.
0830 - Vacant this morning. Discovered the one I've seen often perched in tree nearby is by a nest in the tree. Close quarters to this nest.
0715 - none in nest, one perched near by.
Osprey perched on each post this morning. Adult also in nearby tree where often seen.
Nest vacant the three times I checked yesterday and this morning. Young were more mature than other UD nests so may have fledged while I was away. last week.
~0900 - Nest going strong. Two good sized hatchlings with "panting" open beaks. Two well caring adults seen nearby most of the time.
Almost positive I saw two hatchlings being feed today ~1700. I will check more often to confirm.
Around 1300 today one adult and the large hatchling were active in the nest. Very healthy hatchling.
This nest has one very large young chic. More mature than the two in nest UD-3. Probably only one mouth to feed in the nest. No sign of any other young moving around.
Mom was feeding a young this morning when I drove by. A successful nest thusfar.
Again, this is the best built nest of the ones I observe regularly. It will be interesting to see what other differences we see with raising the clutch. This pair seems like confident, skilled veterans.
This nest was very well built last year and is mostly in tact.
3/13/19- Proud male seen perching on nest post in the afternoon. Maybe just resting in transit to another nest.
