Nesting Diaries

6/18 Adult was feeding on his perch with a large trout, female on nest vocalizing, but human disturbances caused the male to fly off with the fish. I waited for nearly two hours for him to return, feed more, then...what I was waiting for...he finally took the fish to the nest, where the excited female and two (at least) downy chicks were observed.

4/4/19 A lone bird was seen bringing sticks to the nest. 4/6/19 Both birds have been on the ground for three days. I notified the CA Fish and Game and they checked them out, both flew to the nest. 4/10/19 Both birds at nest, male bringing in a fish.

6/29/17 One adult perched on nest. 7/11/17 No activity at nest. I passed this nest quickly the next day after 6/29 and there were a man and boy photographing, so I didn't stop. I thought I say what could have been the head of an adult draped over the edge of the nest. Since that time there has been no activity. My guess is that the bird was shot and killed, ending this pair's occupation.

This nest was partially destroyed over the winter, but the pair have rebuilt and are presently incubating.

7/12/16 One adult on the nest with only two chicks. An adult brought in a fish, but only 2 chicks responded to feeding. Nine days ago, two of the chicks were very active, and the third was low in the nest, very quiet.

7/03/16 When I arrived there was one adult on the nest with three nestlings. It was a full 90 minutes before the male arrived with a small fish, and the female grabbed the fish without the usual greeting, and immediately began feeding the chicks. During the 90 minute wait, the female left the nest twice for short flights, calling all the time. The male left the area and returned 30 minutes later with another small fish, and to a more normal greeting.

5/26/16 One adult in the nest, incubating posture. 6/8/16 When I arrived, one flew from the nest, another stayed at the nest. About 30 minutes later one returned with what I thought would be a fish, but was distracted during the final approach. Noticed strange behavior as the pair "worked over" the prey, which when I was able to download the images realized it was a barn owl. Shots have been submitted to this site. Also, one downy chick was visible over the edge of the nest.
