Nesting Diaries

Interestingly, when I first kayaked past this nest today, both the male and female were on the platform. An hour so later, when I passed again, neither was there.

It seems as if this nest has failed again this year. No osprey sighted anywhere nearby, and definitely not in the nest itself.

05/04/2019 by dabbler22
Female osprey was sitting deep in nest, and male was nearby. This seems to be the most "stable" this nest has been than in past years. Fingers crossed.

Will this finally be a successful year for this nest? I'm happy to report that female was incubating eggs and male was on nearby channel marker.

No osprey activity at this nest today.

07/15/2018 by dabbler22
No ospreys sighted near this nest this evening.

06/24/2018 by dabbler22
No ospreys observed anywhere near this nest today.

No ospreys observed anywhere near this nest when we passed it twice by kayak. Clearly abandoned, once again this year.

05/26/2018 by dabbler22
When we first kayaked past this nest today, we didn't see any ospreys on it, and feared it had been abandoned. However, when we passed it again, less than an hour later, a female osprey was sitting on the edge of the platform, making the typical sound of crying for the male to bring food. We did not see any chicks, but the angle from the water would have been difficult to see them if very small.

Still incubating. Saw one osprey deep in the nest, the other on a nearby channel marker. Glad to see this one is still active.

I'm happy to report that this is the first year since 2015 in which an osprey pair is definitely incubating eggs in this nest. (Most likely the eggs were laid prior to today, but this is the first time I've visited the next in a few weeks.). Female was sitting deep in nest and male was eating a fish nearby.

We're happy to see that this nest seems to be occupied this year. A pair was observed there today, and in fact we saw them mate. A good bit of material has also been built up in the nest. This is the one platform in Pretty Lake that has not been successful, much less really occupied, in the last three years. This seems to be the most promising activity we've seen.

07/09/2017 by dabbler22
There is clearly no activity at this nest, though one adult osprey was sitting on a nearby channel marker today. I'm pretty sure the nest "failed" many, many weeks ago, but I'm confident now that there are no chicks.

Both a male and a female were hanging out at this nest when I paddled by it twice within about 40 minutes the morning of 6/26. They did not seem terribly defensive when I paddled fairly close to them. I'm skeptical that there are any chicks in this nest. Nevertheless, even though this nest had no chicks the past two years, there is definitely more "activity" by an osprey pair this year than I've seen in past years.

Two adults observed in this nest. Could not tell if there was a chick.

06/19/2016 by dabbler22
No ospreys seen anywhere near this nest. I think safe to say nothing going on here.

The activity around this nest remains a mystery. We don't believe there are eggs/hatchlings, but when kayaking past the platform a couple of times on 5/31, at one point there were four ospreys flying around the platform but the platform itself remained empty. On our second visit, one was sitting on the platform, another was on a nearby channel marker, and another was flying overhead. Still, they didn't seem to be "guarding" it as they would as osprey parents.

Today I paddled by this platform at it was empty. However, a male and female osprey were each calmly sitting on two separate channel markers very close by, not bothered at all by me paddling my kayak right next to the platform. I paddled by the platform about half an hour later and one of the adults was sitting on the edge of the nest. I don't think this nest has eggs, given the behavior I continue to see here. Given this this may be a new pair at this platform, since it wasn't occupied last year, my hunch is that this might be a young pair that just hasn't quite figured things out yet.

Yesterday we saw both a male and female osprey sitting on the nest platform. However, neither were sitting deep in the nest, and there was very little nesting material. When we kayaked a bit closer, both flew away. It's hard to tell if they have eggs or have initiated incubation.

04/19/2016 by dabbler22
It appears as if this nest is in fact occupied this year, as it wasn't last year. There seems to be a bit of nesting material, and when I kayaked up to the platform, a male was sitting on the nest. There didn't seem to be any incubation happening, and no female was observed. Will check again soon. Attached is a photo of the male flying off of the platform this evening.

This nest is clearly not occupied this season.
