Incubation behavior started June 9, but during a heavy rainstorm on June 12 there were no parents on the nest for several hours during a rainstorm. By the 13th it was clear that there were no longer any viable nestlings. We suspect that either the parents abandoned the babies, or that they were taken by another raptor.
Last week it seemed as if other ospreys were trying to take over the nest - we had five birds in all putting on an amazing display of aerobatics for about an hour. This week, the original pair seems to have settled in and nest building has continued.
Previous platform, which had never been used, was replaced in 2011, with a taller post, and further from the shore. We had our first nest in 2011, and suspect that this was a first year breeding pair, as they nested later than other ospreys in the nearby area.
March 10 2012 - Single osprey sitting on platform and calling.
