Nesting Diaries
Happy New Year osprey watchers. It’s a lot earlier than usual, but saw the first osprey of the season here today. He/she flew over with a big fish in its talons and went to this nest where he/she partook of a fish lunch. Last year this nest appeared to have been abandoned. The osprey pair built a new nest on an osprey platform a couple of blocks away. So will keep watching to see what happens this year. The 2017 osprey season has officially started here.
No ospreys observed nesting here this time. Will check back in April to see if there are any ospreys there then.
This nest appears to have been abandoned. Two years ago, a nest platform was installed on top of a power pole approximately three blocks from this nest on the busy corner of Rogue River Drive and Highway 62 where the bridge on Hwy 62 goes over the Rogue River. There was no activity on the platform for two years. This year, however, a pair of ospreys built a nest on it and have chicks. I’m pretty sure it is the pair of ospreys who previously had this nest. This nest is atop a dead tree and is very deep and not very wide. Recently I went to check again on this nest and there was an osprey on a dead branch of the dead tree eating. Then I watched him fly straight to the platform nest. So I’m sure this nest is not in use this year.
Checked out nest for first time this season. One osprey in the nest busy with nestorations.
This nest had two chicks that fledged. As of last week they were still at the nest but today there were no ospreys in sight. They must have left for migration. They are building houses very, very close to the nest tree. Hope the ospreys return next year. Will have to wait till April to see.
This nest is very deep so at first I didn’t see anything in the nest. But then the female stood up and her actions were that of rolling her eggs in the nest and she disappeared back down into the nest. Shortly after, the male flew in and perched on one of the branches of the tree. There is construction on a new house going on fairly close to the nest but it hasn’t seemed to bother the birds any.
Two ospreys at nest. One sounded the alarm and they flew off to chase what looked like a bald eagle. When the eagle was pretty much out of sight, the two ospreys flew in circles for a while together high in the sky. What a beautiful sight. Then they returned to the nest tree where they mated on a branch. Must not be any eggs just yet.
Today the ospreys returned to the nest.
Checked the nest again today. Did not see any osprey in the area yet.
Today was my first visit to the nest this year. There were no osprey there. Waited for a bit but didn't see any birds. Will check again this weekend.
11-04-14: There were two chicks at this nest. They both successfully fledged. The osprey from this nest all left around the end of August. This concludes the activity for this nest for 2014.
Observed the mother osprey feeding two chicks. The are still small. All we could see is their little heads popping up to get their food from mom.
Stopped by yesterday to take pictures. There was an adult bird, most likely the female, in the nest. Could only see the top of her head so she must have been sitting on the nest. She sounded the alarm the whole time we were there taking pictures. Never did see the male. Will post pictures when I can figure out how to get them on to the computer.
First saw this nest last year 2013.
March 29, 2014 was first sighting of this season. Saw one osprey flying in and out of nest.
April 12, 2014 Observed osprey fly into nest. Looked like there was also an osprey nesting.
