There is now anest on a live, but stunted tree! It is probably the tree that held the nest until several years ago. Wee, the Osprey have returned to construct the nest. Today I did not observe sny osprey on the nest or perched in nearby trees. Some passersby told me that they have observed Ospreys on the nest. I will check again in a few days.
Both Osprys were observed sitting on a tree adjacent to the old nest. There were some disorganized sticks on this tree, but it was not even close to being a complete nest.
I believe it was the female osprey that was sitting on the collection of sticks in the tree near the previous nest. The male was perched on a tree about 60 yes away. The man made osprey platform in the vicinity was occupied by a great blue Herron.
I observed a lone osprey on the skinny tree with some nesting material at the top. There is still no nest and the other osprey was not seen. The man made osprey platform was devoid of any nest material.
As I walked the trail I could hear osprey calling. Stopping on the old bridge, I observed the adult male osprey perched at the top of the skinny tree (looks like a snag with some leaves). This is the tree in which the previous year's nest was built by the osprey and blew out over the winter. It appeared to me that a small pile of sticks were formed at the top of this tree/snag (typically shaped like a small nest). I realize it's late; chicks have been hatched in other osprey nests nearby. Another adult osprey was perched on a nearby tree snag to the right. After about twenty minutes, this adult flew from the snag. A little while later, the adult osprey on the first tree snag flew off.
After a number of rainy days, I was able to get out to the trail and observe the osprey nests. Stopping on the bridge, I was able to observe the lone osprey perched at the top of the skinny tree (has some leaves; looks like dead tree snag in winter). No new nest has been built. Osprey sat very still. After about twenty minutes, I continued on to the next osprey nest I was to monitor. I returned about an hour later and observed the osprey still perched at the top of the tree. To the right however, another osprey was perched at the top of a different dead tree snag. Both osprey were very still; about 11:45, both osprey flew off.
Laura/Larry.......the lonely Osprey was perched in the same spot on the dead tree to the right of the nest at 0730. The empty Osprey platform was occupied by a
perched great blue Heron.
I observed the same osprey in the tree adjacent to the old nest. He just perched there thru the heavy rain. There was no nest building activity on the platform close to the bridge.
There is still no evidence of a nest being rebuilt, though there were a pair of ospreys in the area. On remained perched on a tree to the immediate right of the old nest, whilst the other moved about in the air and perching about 400 yds away from the other osprey. the first osprey in the tree remained there for at least 50 minutes without taking flight
Observed the dead tree snag. Still wondering if osprey will rebuild nest that blew out during the winter months. Possibly a few small sticks at top of snag; difficult to know for sure.
The nest blew out this past winter. As of today, no new nest building or osprey in evidence. But they've typically been late so we'll keep our fingers crossed.
The nest is completed and has been since April 9. However, there are no osprey sitting in the tree and no one is incubating. I fear this nest may be abandoned.
The nest appears complete and one adult is usually sitting on the rim. However, the female has not been settled low on the nest. I am unsure if she's incubating but think not.
As before, we've only seen one osprey the several times we've checked on this nest. However, it was completely blown away over the winter and now there are quite a few branches in position. The female was sitting on the beginnings of a nest, calling out. A second osprey was flying over but it is unconfirmed that the second osprey belonged to that nest. We'll continue to monitor.
Female was sitting on the dead snag where last year's nest was located. A second osprey was flying overhead. It appeared as if sticks had been added to the top of the snag. Hopefully they are rebuilding.
Osprey are everywhere in Greensprings, flying overhead. However, no nests have been rebuilt yet this spring and none of the osprey have sat on last year's nesting site yet. I will continue to monitor and hope for a return.
Sadly we lost one young osprey to the June 13th storm. Only one survived and it has now fledged. However, I think it will be around for us to enjoy for another week or so.
