Nest #260

Nickname: Chambers Bay Golf Course
Nest substrate: Concrete structure
Nest Location Description: Nest is on a concrete structure in the "Central Meadow" of the golf course. See photo. Over past 5 years, this pair has had their nest removed from an old pier piling that was removed, causing the birds to move to the concrete structure. In 2015 the nest was removed for a golf tournament, and a platform on a pole was erected 200 meters south, which they used in 2016 and 2017. In 2018 that platform was claimed by a Canada Goose and the pair returned to the current concrete structure.

1230 - Female on nest, food begging. Male perched and preening on opposite end of structure. 1240 - Male flies off and begins hunting along shoreline heading north. First of Year observation of pair at nest.

04/06/2019 by turtleguy
One OSPR observed flying in vicinity of nest.

09/05/2018 by turtleguy
Last fledgling has deformed/crossed bill. Photo added. Looks healthy, flying around nest. Adult still bringing food to nest.

05/04/2018 by kissel
Two ospreys on concrete stucture. Nest seems well built and large. Observed One osprey adding material to nest. Also previous nest site on pole that was previously reported occupied by Canada Geese was empty. No signs of geese.

04/15/2018 by turtleguy
1100- Nest construction has continued on south end of concrete structure in central meadow of golf course. Exact location of 2014 nest. Female OSPR on north end of structure, feeding. Male at mid-structure, also feeding.

04/09/2018 by turtleguy
Nest platform where ospreys successfully nested in previous 3 years is still occupied by incubating CAGO. Osprey pair now perching on the concrete structure where they nested in 2014. A small collection of sticks now present. Male flying around with 1/2 of a small fish, temporarily landing near the female (at the probable new nest), but then leaves with fish and lands on the gravel about 100 m to the south. Female continues to perch at the new nest, food begging.

Nest continues to be occupied by a Canada Goose that appears to be incubating. Today was first day a pair of osprey were observed in the vicinity of the nest, however both birds were perched on other structures on the golf course, making no visible attempt to go to the nest platform. One of the osprey was perched exactly where the nest had been in 2014.

04/08/2017 by turtleguy
Two ospreys observed at nest platform - first sighting of pair this year. Shortly after I arrived, one osprey flew north in haste to intercept a 3rd osprey that was fishing along the shore 300 m north of nest. One osprey remained on the nest platform. The departed bird had not returned after 30 minutes and the remaining osprey remained on the nest, occasionally calling.

04/07/2017 by turtleguy
High winds today (20-30 mph). No osprey seen in vicinity.

04/06/2017 by turtleguy
One osprey observed on nest. After 25 minutes, it lifts off and circles 8-10 times over the driving range pond then drifts NW across the golf course to the sore, then north for 300 meters, then back across golf course at base of the hill, past the waste water treatment plant and on out of sight down Chambers Bay.

04/04/2017 by turtleguy
Upon arrival, one osprey observed circling the small pond near the parking lot. Five minutes later, the osprey is back on the nest. Only one osprey seen today.

04/03/2017 by turtleguy
One osprey observed sitting on nest, silently waiting.....

04/02/2017 by turtleguy
One osprey on nest platform. Departs and returns with a stick. Departs again 5 minutes later and returns with another stick. No other activity for the next 40 minutes.

03/31/2017 by turtleguy
One osprey observed on nest platform perch. First osprey seen at this nest this year.

06/20/2016 by turtleguy
First observation of nestlings today. Brown and already getting facial stripes. Active in nest.

06/05/2016 by turtleguy
Photo Pro RW observed and photographed female activity in the nest that indicated that hatching had occurred. No hatchlings seen yet.

04/06/2016 by turtleguy
Both birds sitting on perch bar, preening near sunset. Not many sticks have been added to the nest platform. Still rather sparse. Photo attached

03/31/2016 by turtleguy
The female is now at the nest with the smaller male. He brought her part of a fish today, but that did not stop her from calling constantly while he stood beside her.

03/30/2016 by turtleguy
After daily checks for the past week, the first Osprey has been observed at the nest this afternoon. Only one bird observed so far.

07/31/2015 by turtleguy
Observation of this nest continues to be limited due to closure of golf course while clean up from the US Open continues in the central meadow. Nest observed from 800 meters away. This morning, all three juvs could be seen standing on nest and 1 adult ospr perched on bar above nest. No juv yet seen flying or off nest. Should fledge any day, as other nests in area have begun fledging.

04/28/2015 by turtleguy
1145 - both ospreys at nest platform. One in incubation position in the nest, one perched on the cross bar above the nest.

04/24/2015 by turtleguy
1800 - male on nest, female finishing feeding on telephone pole just north of bridge. She returns to the nest, the male comes off nest, copulates with female and moves off. Female then wiggles down into nest to take over incubation.

04/22/2015 by turtleguy
No incubation yet. The nest has grown to a nice size from the bare platform the pair started with 3 weeks ago. Today I watched a sub-adult bald eagle steal a flounder from one of the ospreys as it approached the nest platform. With construction for the US Open golf tournament in full swing, the ospreys do not seem to be bothered.

04/02/15- 1600 - First day pair present. First use of new nest platform (installed last year but not used). The 2014 nest was on a large concrete structure in the "central meadow" portion of the Chambers Creek Golf Course. This year in June, the US Open golf tournament is being held at this golf course, and there has been tremendous construction activity in the immediate vicinity of the previous nest. One Osprey arrived yesterday and the second one arrived today. Immediately, one of the birds has begun flying sticks to the platform while the other one sits on the edge of the platform and watches. Not enough material accumulated yet to call this a nest. The new nest is now 1,150 meters north of the active osprey nest #484.

Today at approx 3PM, only one bird was standing on the nest. The large grassy field directly below and to the east of the nest was crowded with people, several of them flying large, colorful and acrobatic kites. Some of the kites were high enough to be about the same level of the nest. As I watched, the osprey lifted off the nest and flew NE over the golf course, then swooped down along one of the roughs and grabbed some vegetation, then returned to the nest. No incubation activity observed.

04/23/2014 by turtleguy
The osprey pair have begun nest construction on a large concrete structure in the "Central Meadow" of the golf course. This nest is approximately 180 meters SE of the old nest location on the pier pilings. This nest does not appear to be in a very secure position. It remains to be seen if it will stay in place. This evening at 1830, one bird was standing on the nest and the other was a few meters away, both weathering a passing rain squall.

04/19/2014 by turtleguy
All possible nesting structures on this pier have been covered to prevent nesting. Plans exist to remove all creosote pilings from shoreline.

08/04/2012 by Montanero
All 3 hatchlings are now fledged. The last one was observed flying early on the morning of Aug 3. The other two had fledged each of the two previous days. Male and Female are still in the area, and the female is still visiting the nest to sit with fledglings. No fishing attempts by the fledglings have been observed yet. Both adults are fishing and returning to pier near the nest to feed. Female was still feeding Fledgling #3 away from the nest on Aug 3.
